WASHINGTON (Reuters) - The Obama administration on Tuesday said it will back repealing a hard-to-enforce tax on personal use of work cellphones, appeasing the business community, phone makers and users.

Treasury "Secretary (Timothy) Geithner and I ask that Congress act to make clear that there will be no tax consequence to employers or employees for personal use of work-related devices such as cellphones provided by employers," Douglas Shulman, the Internal Revenue Service Commissioner, said in a statement.

Hello,

The free cell phone is a good idea. Foodstamp and low income families will be able to find a job, because they will be able to receive a phone call from a job that is hiring. For example, if you apply for a job how can you know that you have the job or an interview if you dont have a way to call the job back?

The government already provides and subsidizes landline phones for the poor. Take a good look at the fees/taxes on your phone bill.

They don't need free cell phones..cell phones are luxuries, NOT necessities.

This is why we should remove the income tax and just replace it with a 3% federal sales tax on everything.
Exempt food, clothing and housing.
Fund the government with 3% all other fees, sin taxes and other nonsense will be GONE!
Its amazing why we even agree to this insanity it never ends and government has to stop itself from taxing us to death. Obama will probably repeal the tax on the cell phone and tax the batteries instead!

I still want to see the study that displays just how our cell phone tax has benefitted the outcome of the Spanish-American War.
