Then just what do you believe the government should provide? No-bid contracts to defense contractors?

ontheroad, I have my doubts about how well existing universal health care systems can work in the US. The US, more than any other nation, is about "me first". Also, I wonder how viable it would be with our increasing income disparity.

Saying that churches are not biased is a joke.

If I belong to a club, it has its own biases, and you better believe that a church has a lot more pride and dedication than a club.

Yes and I am sure that your employer has to help pay for your premium. What happens when an employer refuses or cannot pay for the policy to help contribute to the plan.

It would be a challenge to say the least with the present philosophy among most of us in the US, and yes, the differences in income would present a problem, but I think not as much as we might imagine.

The IOM (Institute of Medicine) did a study in the early 90s, of which I was a minor player, and this was reviewed, discussed and dissected nearly under a microscope.

Still, I think it could be done if we had the will!

pixie, then you have to find an employer who will. Its called choice, i had to make them why shouldnt others?? No one forces others to take the job with low wages or no health insurance.

If my boss pays part of the premium, I thank them for doing so, i dont whine and think it is their obligation

Carolinajack, just looked it up, my husband met all the criteria but is a smoker (legal cigaettes), so he is not eligible. Just incase anyone else is interested:

HOW DOES MEDI-SHARE WORK?
The Medi-Share program brings Christians together to share their medical bills on a voluntary basis. This unique ministry is based on the biblical principles of sharing and caring and encourages brothers and sisters in Christ to stand in the gap for one another.
WHY ARE SHARE AMOUNTS SO LOW?
Medi-Share is a not-for-profit ministry. You are sharing among other brothers and sisters in Christ, and not supporting non-Christian, unbiblical lifestyle choices, including drug or alcohol abuse, gluttony or other kinds of behavior that lead to high medical costs. HOW FLEXIBLE IS MEDI-SHARE?
Choose from two different program options and use the doctor of your choice. Receive the maximum advantage when you choose medical care from a network of over 750,000 providers nationwide; or you may use other providers with a modest reduction in the amount shared. Thats not all -- Medi-Share is convenient. It doesn't matter where you work, if you're self-employeed, or if you change jobs. Your Medi-Share members share with you wherever you go -- even out of the country if on missions work.
HOW MUCH WILL MY SHARE BE?
A family of three or more will pay as little as $185 and up to $404 per month, depending on which program they participate in. IS MEDI-SHARE NEW?
NO! Medi-Share was founded in 1993. Today, Medi-Share has more than 50,000 Christian members and, in total, members have shared over $275,000,000 in eligible medical needs.
QUALIFICATIONS FOR MEMBERSHIP
Medi-Share is based on the biblical principles of caring for and sharing in one another’s burdens (as outlined in Galatians 6:2). And as such, adhering to biblical principles of health and lifestyle are important requirements for membership in Medi-Share. Below are the key qualifications for membership.

All adult members must: Have a verifiable Christian testimony indicating a personal relationship with the Lord Jesus Christ.
Agree that believers are to bear one another’s burdens.
Attend a fellowship of believers and regularly and actively support that ministry.
Not engage in sex outside of traditional Christian marriage.
Believe the biblical doctrine that their bodies are temples of the Holy Spirit and therefore are to be kept pure. Violations of this doctrine include the use of tobacco in any form and the abuse of drugs, including legal drugs, such as alcohol.

My husband likes his job, makes good money and did pay his own insurance out of pocket. He had to cancel the policy when I got sick because it was one less income. If he goes out looking for a new job, more than likley he will find one with health insurance but not with the salary he gets now. This is our plan for the future, once I go back to work. Meanwhile he has been having migraines on and off for over three months with no medical attention.

In SOuth Florida it is VERY hard to get good paying jobs with benefits.

Not everyone is a Christian and just because someone is not a Christian doesn't mean they don't deserve help.

We're talking about national/universal health care not Christian health care.
