According to a recent poll, a majority of Texans support either civil unions or gay marriage.

So much for Texas being Ultra Conservative or backwards.

That really tells me that gay marriage should be a non-issue. Average people don't really give two craps about it.

Well I think it's more openly accepted in the bigger cities where there are more liberals.
Outside of that, most of the Texas towns are conservative and while they might quietly acknowledge gays, they probably wouldn't fully accept them into the community.
Heck, if you weren't born there they might not accept you for 10-15 years and still call you the "new" person

I will believe that when the state of texas votes yes for either gay marriage or a civil union. I think more states would vote yes for a civil union but calling it marriage is whats hurting the cause

Doesn't most of the population live in the bigger cities?

LOL. It's the same here in Minnesota. In some small towns the Swedes won't even mix with the Norwegians.

Aren't a lot of Texas conservatives more Libertarian? I thought I read somewhere that West Texas is more dominated by libertarians than by religious conservatives.

It's a big state and yeah..it's dominated by various groups in it's sections.

The big cities are liberal but not the California type liberal. Even in Texas the liberals are on the conservative side if you can understand that.

Even if it's true, it would take a constitutional amendment. Since 2/3 of the State Senate and State House have to approve constitutional amendments before they even get to the voters, it won't be happening for a loooong time.

A lot of people in Texas might not be as backward but the politicians sure are.

It's not a strong majority when it is only a bit over 50%. They also didn't say how many were interviewed and in what areas of Texas.

Have you seen the Texas Republican Party platform (the state-level platform)? It's INSANE.

Granted, the lawmakers aren't as bad as the platform, but still...
