Why exactly does someone have to be a "hero" to receive recognition?
Was Princess Diana a "hero" ? And yet her country honored her with one of the biggest funerals in history, with days of media coverage.
Are U.S. presidents "heros"? And yet ... they have flags fly at half-mast, and have huge funerals, also with a ton of media coverage.

He was not American Icon. Why were his children white and had a white
male nail his wife to get her pregnant.
Sleeping with young boys with warm milk doesn't smooth over well.
Bleaching his skin and drug store cowboy doesn't make this thug
an idol or icon!
Look what he did to his children by killing myself on a drug overdose.
I feel very sorry for his children, very sad!

His art was gay-metro as was he.
Shallow, expensive gimmickry, "exciting" to the prepubescent.

I guess I still don't see the comparison. Aside from Bill Cosby and possibly Sammy Davis Jr I doubt those people will be household names for anyone born in the last 10 years. MJ's music has been and probably still will be generational.

Princess Di was done in by all the Queen's men.
For that reason, tribute HAD to be paid her.
Jackson was done in by reality catching up to his ego.
Neverland became Everland.

Certainly I would say MJ was a great entertainer and especially to those who favored his type of music. That said I'm not sure that the congressional moment of silence was appropriate for an entertainer---any entertainer.
IMO what we have here is a national social item. A priority--civil--ethical issue, that has nothing to do what so ever with liberal or conservative choices or labels.
In a country where sports and the participants (and many other pursuits) loom ahead of necessary and society enriching programs, the huge resources and recognition are focused elsewhere. I'm sure most of us can think of solid beneficial facets of society that go without while the comparative trinkets of society continue without challenge.
I imagine Dr. Phil or his colleagues would explain that the extremism is indeed part of human nature and that failure to control it gives rise to many of our countrys ills including (in part) to our current economic problems. Indeed, it is much easier and a lot more fun to find ways to enjoy ourselves while the dull and dead-end problems are forever navigated by our officials. May as well fiddle while this thing burns as we are powerless--and probably poorer, is an accepted attitude by many. I'm sure you have noticed.

Those words you posted as mine were not mine, if you will look back at my posts on this thread. I actually responded to the poster who wrote those words. I DO NOT think Michael Jackson, or any other entertainer, deserves all the hoopla his death has received. They are people just like the rest of us - no more important....none of us knew MJ, Farrah, Elvis, etc. personally so I don't understand the crazy emotions and grief. I grieve over friends and family members who pass away, and I grieve when a member of our military, police force, and fire departments pass away while serving their communities and nation.....not singers, dancers, actors, or comedians.

Ok you got me on that one, how could I have left out a key word like I have NEVER been...? But I can't let you get away with the Barry Manilow shot, that's a low blow even by your standards You could have at least downgraded me to the Bee Gees, but not all the way down to Barry Manilow, Lol.
