Default Schwarzenegger declares fiscal emergency

California Government Declares Fiscal Emergency Over Budget - ABC News

Quote:
California Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger on Wednesday declared a fiscal emergency to force lawmakers into a special session to tackle a state budget gap that has widened to $26.3 billion from $24.3 billion after they failed to close it on Tuesday.
Schwarzenegger and the republicans say they won't accept a dime in new taxes and the democrats want to massively raise taxes. This should be one hell of a fight. Stay tuned.

Ahhnuld needs to terminate welfare and special interest spending. Maybe this is a push away from self-destruction for California? I doubt it.

How much is their budget? Over a trillion?

You mean to tell me they can't find $25 billion to cut?

Ridiculous.

I found this earlier, kind of cool. It is an interactive game where you try to balance their budget.

Why are there no choices that allow you to cut programs (other than incarceration) for illegal immigrants, but allow you to keep them for everyone else?

Not quite. The suggested proposals from the Governor's Office call for budgeted spending of from $95-111 billion total from all funding sources.

What's ridiculous is that this has been facing the state for years and the various legislatures and governors have indulged in smoke and mirrors, tricks and borrowing. Now the roosters have come home to roost! It's about time!

State budget balancer - Los Angeles Times
There I did it. I actually created a surplus. The only thing that I regret doing was increasing the gas tax. There are also a few other things that I'd do and/or look into that weren't offered as options in this game. First, and this is a no brainer. There is a tax loophole that lets purchasers of yachts and private planes avoid paying taxes on their purchase if they ditch it out of state for 90 days. Closing this loophole would generate $26 million a year. Second, I'd look into creating a solar state-run solar energy company; perhaps this company would need to be half state run, half private. It's an idea that I've had for a while and I feel that it could generate alot of money for the state. The problem is that due to the 2/3rd requirement in the Senate and State Assembly; this is the main reason why this budget would never go through.

Edit - The choices allow you to cut programs to legal immigrants, but I was under the impression that CA provided services to illegals as well. Am I wrong?

I created a surplus without raising taxes.

Notice they left out all the millions/billions spent on illegal immigrants.
