"The U-6 figure includes everyone in the official rate plus “marginally attached workers” — those who are neither working nor looking for work, but say they want a job and have looked for work recently; and people who are employed part-time for economic reasons, meaning they want full-time work but took a part-time schedule instead because that’s all they could find."

This is the TRUE unemployment rate that the government would rather people not know about. Thanks for posting.

It's scandalous. I am waiting for all the homeless and food bank stories on the news. Oh wait that is only when Republicans are in office.

I'll look too. Based on this article it should be worse now. I am sure the Times is working on a follow up story.

Actually, if you measured unemployment accurate like Euro countries do, it would be the US rate times .50 so 9.4 x .50= 4.7 then add that to 9.4 = 14.1%. So the REAL rate is 14.1%. And don't blame Obama for it. HE didn't make this mess.

Well, it would seem to me that an article written on November 10, 2008, would accurately reflect the current times, especially considering that the unemployment rate has jumped several points since then. I doubt it would be hard to find evidence of food pantries falling on hard times in July 2009.

Shorebaby, you won't see big headlines on this.
Go to your local food bank, thrift store or even Wallymart.
Look around. See for yourself. Ask questions.
It's happening and the media is downplaying it.
Food banks need donations bad.
I drop off cases of canned vegetables to my local pantry and it's gone as quick as it comes in. They are hurting for donations as the numbers of people needing help have surged.

Food pantries struggle to meet middle class needs - WTHR | Indianapolis
snippet:
"People who work in food pantries say that a new type of client has come out of the recession. Middle-class people who have never gone hungry suddenly need the system to feed their families.
..
The new clients are not used to relying on government or social-service help, so they often feel humbled or embarrassed by their situation, added Beverly Pierce, a coordinator of the food pantry at Park Place."
