Fwiw, the woman has a husband who doesn't make a huge income, an infant with Down's Syndrome, and ethics investigators and the media up her butt. Oh! And a young daughter that needs help raising her baby. I can see how she could make a decision to walk away. She can earn a good living *and* have national political influence in the media.

Quitting halfway as a governor when she needs all the experience she can get is REALLY bad politics.
I guess she's being a hockey mom and wanting the time to help raise her child and her grandchild. She can earn a living by giving speeches and I assume she's not a bad writer and could write a bestseller.
