Or can they? Yep. No problem, attack fireworks. That's a good proxy. It's the esthetics, you know.
Scott Lemieux hates 'em. Freaking boring. And he gets a big rah rah from ... wait for it ... Matthew Yglesias! At least you can catch a good party! Their inspiration is Slate (where else), "Fireworks Suck: They Really Do."
Try looking at the teaparty people, dissin' the US on the 4th of July.
Have they no respect?!

Ya know, I keep coming back to this thread and it really ticks me off. Are you a troll?

I LOVE my country. I flew my flag today. Did you? I have voted in every election for the passed 38 years. Did you?

You don't have a clue what it means to love this country. Not a clue.

From waht i have seen the Te4a Party is what this cpountry is about. Voicing your opinion without riots and violence. A breathe of fresh air after so much burning and looting by the usual thugs in protest.Dissing obanma isn't the same as the USA if you don't know the difference. But I won't expect the hate party to know the difference.

You got that just right, HIF. This liberal "America-hater" hosted the family;
on the table we had a picture of my dad at 23 in his WW II Navy uniform, and the other grandfather in his 101st Airborne uniform from Korea. Then friends came to join us and everyone got relaxed. About dusk we all went into our back field, where the young men put on quite the pyrotechnic display...it's a tradition. One little 3 year-old was singing "Comfortably Numb" during a short break...appropriate! The guys have a grand finale, and everyone sings "The Star-Spangled Banner." And we mean it...we love America. After everyone left, we watched a documentary called Last of the Mississippi Juke Joints. My husband and I honeymooned at the Greenville Blues Festival.
Sounds just filled with hatred and loathing, right? Steven Van Zandt says it for me well, and it doesn't hurt that it's Jackson Browne singing.
Hope everyone had a great Fourth of July!

The guys I voted for lost 3 of the last 5 elections (and wasn't to happy with things when the guy I voted for did win) and I love this country no less when it is run by someone I didn't vote for and don't agree with. You can be distressed with the direction, disagree with some of the policies, whatever, but an abiding trust in the principles and ideals of the country, and faith in its citizenry, in the end, are all we have to cling to.

If being a patriot means we have to blindly love this country no matter what the authorities decide is best for us, then I'm not a patriot, but if it means that I can love this country and defend its principles against what even the President thinks is best for us, then I am a patriot.

You know, I would love to see where it is carved in stone that left haters get to define what is and isn't American. What is it with the jingoe crowd that they think they own the copyright to the definition of American?

NOT all left wingers hate the US or the 4th of July....some of us are not sheeple; we have our own free minds...never stereotype any one group of people. I think many left wingers have the gonads to stand up for the truth and realize our nation IS very hypocritical of other countries...sometimes showing that we too are hypocrites on many issues....especially equal human rights.

I see where you're coming from, but I can also see people seeing that the country has shifted away dramatically from (some of) its ideals and principles over the past 50 or so years (and closer in other regards). As a note a lot of things are much larger than the country's political structure, so the vote part of your equation is junk in some American's minds.

What to eat..... the Dems are trying hard to impose high taxes on certain types of food in an effort to change peoples diets

What to drive.... start with Govt motors, they will be forced to produce hybrids and along with the gas mileage standard they are forcing us to drive the vehicles they want us to drive

How to vote.... by manipulating our minds through the TV media they are trying to indoctrinate us to the Dem party

How to school our children.... by trying to make home schooling illegal and forcing kids into their liberal indoctrination camps

How to heat our homes.... again it goes along with the elimination of other energy sources in favor of the ones they want because of the mythical ghost also known as human caused global warming.

YES... any intelligent and free thinking person can see right through all of the Liberal fantasies and see that it is nothing more than an extreme power grab
