Crappy food is cheaper? I dont quite agree with that. Go to the grocery store and for $15 you can have more than a weeks worth of fruit and vegatbles.
And, if it would get eaten before it all rots, I just might do that. However, those who share my abode with me are not big on fruits and veggies. That same $15-20 will by me TWO weeks worth of frozen dinners, which I don't have to worry about spoiling unless the power goes out.

For more reasons than I care to list, I wouldn't eat at Applebee's if they paid me!

I will admit that, as I've gotten older, I really don't like cooking any more, mainly because I don't like the clean-up. Also depends on how you define 'healthy foods'. I know one lady who eats almost nothing but salads and yogurt. She considers this a 'healthy diet'.
One way I've found to save a lot of money and eat healthy is cook a week's worth of food on Sunday night for lunch/dinner each day. Then keep the leftovers in the fridge. I can eat for $1-2/day doing that and stay healthy too.

Yes, we do bulk cooking, too. If you're going to cook one meal, you might as well cook more. It dirties no more pots or utensils, and you can use up foods bought on sale or in bulk. For us, today's bulk cooking meal is a Mexican-style shredded chicken with salsa verde. We'll have a couple of lunches out of it this week, plus tonight's dinner.
... Why is it OK to slam overweight people, yet if the same insults were hurled towards gays, blacks, muslims, hispanics, etc, it would be deemed "hate speech?????"
Because "fat" is an equal opportunity condition ..

That's why people don't do their shopping at Applebees. Fruits and vegetables are the most expensive things to buy in bulk. Especially if you buy good fruits and vegetables, as in not pumped full of growth hormone and pesticide.

Some of these posts are so interesting..and revealing.
The comment about "equal opportunity condition" is true. Any racial group is vulnerable, but some more than others. Seems to me most of the root cause of overweight starts in the home during childhood. I was raised in a Midwest farm community where large portions, heavy carb/fat and meat servings were standard. We learn our eating patterns from the cradle. Once we have food expectations (and we have laid down fat cells that insist on being filled), its awfully hard to break them.
I see very overweight children almost every day. I so want to stop these parents and beg them to allow their kids to eat a proper diet and exercise. They are condemning their kids to a life of weight struggles. Of course that won't happen. Fat adults lead to fat kids in most cases. The fat adults learned their patterns from their parents. It is such a complex problem.
The original topic of this thread has something to do with asking if overweight folks are somehow depriving others of available food in the world. Seems to me there is a much bigger problem/question here. How on earth do we ever stop these patterns?
Speaking of fat parents that raise fat kids, what is up with the Roseanne show? Morbidly obese Mom and Dad who eat everything in reach somehow manage to raise 3 string bean kids. Was it a recessive gene?
