WASHINGTON – President Barack Obama promised to fix health care and trim the federal budget deficit, all without raising taxes on anyone but the wealthiest Americans. It's a promise he's already broken and will likely have to break again. Obama and the Democratic-controlled Congress have already increased tobacco taxes — which disproportionately hit the poor — to pay for extending health coverage to 4 million children in working low-income families.
|
Quote:
Obama made a firm tax pledge during the presidential campaign, repeating it numerous times in the weeks and months leading up to Election Day: no tax increases for individuals making less than $200,000 a year or couples making less than $250,000.
"Not your income tax, not your payroll tax, not your capital gains taxes, not any of your taxes," Obama told a crowd in Dover, N.H., last year.
But less than a month after taking office, Obama signed an expansion of child health care financed by 62-cent tax increase on each pack of cigarettes.

Caught in the lie. I guess he was hoping the press wouldn't bring it up.

I would not hope for a brush fire just yet, especially from the AP. But as they say, even a broken clock is right twice a day.

October 03, 2007 -- Des Moines, IA -- Barack Obama spoke out today against President Bush's veto of the Children's Health Insurance Reauthorization Act of 2007. The bill, which passed the Senate but not the House with a veto proof margin, would have enabled Iowa to cover an additional 26,400 children currently without health insurance. The veto will also cut children from health insurance plans in states where the funding is currently at a higher level than the Federal law allows.
"With one stroke of the pen, the President has denied basic health coverage to 26,400 children in Iowa, putting ideology ahead of compassion and common sense. At a time when we're spending billions of dollars on a war that should never have been authorized and giving billions in tax breaks to the wealthiest Americans, today's veto of this bipartisan plan shows a callousness of priorities that is offensive to the ideals we hold as Americans. But George Bush doesn't have the last word, and I will keep fighting for the Republican votes needed to override his veto," said Barack Obama.
So from at least THIRTEEN MONTHS prior to the election, Obama was hammering on the need for passage of S-CHIP legislation -- every version of which was funded by increases in tobacco taxes -- yet there are some people dumb enough to believe that when Obama was claiming that his income tax reform plans would not tax families below $250K or individuals below $200K, he was really talking about excise taxes. What a bunch of -- to use the rightwing word for it -- loosers...

Ah, it would be nice if they could contain themselves to only tobacco. They simply can't help themselves. The reality is they can't do everything they want to and not raise taxes on everyone, a lot.
"Sen. Chuck Schumer, D-N.Y., said negotiators are still looking for revenue alternatives. Asked during an interview with The Associated Press if they included tax increases on families with incomes less than $250,000 a year, Schumer said, "There are lots of things on the table now."
"The floated proposals include increasing taxes on alcohol, which could raise $62 billion over the next decade, and a new tax on sugary drinks such as soda, which could raise $52 billion."
This is nice.

He claimed their taxes would not be raised - any and all taxes. The Tobacco Tax is a tax. But he's not stopping there, you must realize?

Neo-cons are such losers. They do nothing to help. They have nothing to offer. Their sole reason for living is to **** on the President, divide the nation, and bring down the American government.
He claimed taxes would not be raised. During the campaign. Before the bottom fell out of the economy.
If he has to raise taxes, so be it. Step up to the plate and pay more taxes, like the American patriot you only claim to be.

Nice engaging style you have, even with your winning ways you are wrong. Note the date of the article.

The left's fear of dissent is palpable. Is the fear that his positions are so indefensible?
