WASHINGTON (Reuters) - The U.S. Agriculture Department would be given the power to regulate all food sold in schools -- including vending machine snacks -- when Congress renews child nutrition programs, the chairman of the Senate Agriculture Committee said on Tuesday.
Chairman Tom Harkin said he hopes the committee will start work on legislation to reauthorize school lunch programs in October or November, with a goal to conclude the work by the end of the year

Simple solution..get rid of the vending machines. Ever since they first came in loaded with soda and candy they've been nothing but a pain.

The food that school lunches provide is already under some kind of guideline.

What are they doing besides creating some new jobs here ?

You have my vote Gayle.

Our school fired the government a few years ago because of all the stupid paperwork.. At the time we were using them, we had to serve 10 grains per week---that's all carbs. Serving sizes were determined by where the fruit was grown. An orange is an orange is an orange!
The cafeteria would have needed a full time person just to handle the paperwork and the school could not afford it. So we fired the government and now we can serve nutritious well balanced meals that the kids actually like.

There's one more requirement...

Do you currently owe any back taxes? No? Sorry, you're not qualified.

I'm going to start packing my kid's lunches this year. The food at our school is terrible junk and it's expensive as opposed to what you actually get. I'd be better off buying lunchables on sale ... and they're even junky, but not as bad as what the school is offering.

When I was in Jr. High we had a row in the cafeteria of at least 20 vending machines. Sodas, candy, chips etc etc. We didn't have any hot lunches, but we did have microwave burritos from taco bell, fried burritos from the burrito wagon, french fries, hamburgers etc. available.

It was disgusting. My mom always packed my lunch for me.
