This is an interesting article on food stamps from a Memphis publication.

I don't see how anyone could afford fresh fruits and vegetables on that budget. It probably would be cheaper to eat at McD's.

Because you are neglecting a large portion of the population that may need assistance. I don't think you've thought it through.

So.. no spices, oils, sweeteners or white flours with which to prepare common recipes? No mayo or miracle whip to mix up with your tuna, no cheese....

Like its many brothers and sisters, this entire thread is a complete crock. The actual national fraud rate for the food stamp program is about 2%. In states that have stricter monitoring programs such as Pennsylvania, it's about one-half of 1%. Where food stamp fraud does occur, many more dollars worth of it are perpetrated by the rightwing's beloved small businesses than by recipients.

The current general benefit per month for a family of two is $367 MINUS 30% of net household income. For a family of four, it is $668 MINUS 30% of net household income. The average per person monthly benefit is just over $100.

Oh, I've thought it through. I said that the very old and the very young needed assistance. That's basically it. Everyone else just needs to work a little harder and, most importantly, a little smarter.

No. Hey, you don't have to use food stamps. You can actually work your butt off like the rest of us and buy spices, oils, sweetners and all the rest of the goodies. Work = rewards.

They get around that by say taking a weeks vacation and only showing that check or a paycheck that doesnt have their full pay on it. They take a couple sick days not getting paid and submit that check as their reg pay

Yeah, and your source for these claims is what? These are "the dog ate my homework" claims that already didn't work in the third grade.
