Let me ask a stupid question. What's the problem with a teleprompter? I don't see the difference in using a teleprompter and using a written speech. Or index cards outlining a speech. It's nothing new to have one's speech or presentation written in advance, just newish technology.

Are those so opposed to telepromtpers also critical of educators that use powerpoint presentations instead of an overhead projector or slides?

I am not getting the joke. Why such an outpouring of disdain for the teleprompter?

Although I strongly support Obama, I do have some reservations about his heavy usage of teleprompters. All presidents give speeches written by others, but using a teleprompter seems to be a more obvious reminder that the words he's speaking are not coming directly from him. It's maybe similar to the difference between a singer who actually sings while on stage versus one who lip-syncs to a prerecorded audio tape.

Ironically, Obama is probably the best writer we've had as President for a very long time. He's quite involved with writing his own speeches, from what I understand. Unfortunately, he could be reading a speech that he wrote entirely on his own, but the teleprompter gives the impression that he's reading a speech that someone else wrote for him.

Gives the impression, but doesn't mean that it is so. That's what I don't get. A teleprompter allows you to have more direct eye contact with your audience. It is no indication of whose words you are using.

I've written speeches for elected officials that have been printed out in 28 point font for them. I've given my own speeches from written pages. Regardless, I would think that a teleprompter would be a more effective way to do so.

It is no indication of who actually crafted the speech. Apples and oranges.

He's into tech. Loves his Blackberry. His use of a teleprompter seems to fit.

There's nothing wrong with using a teleprompter.

But it gives a bunch of whiny losers something to complain about.

HIF, I appreciate your thoughts and observations, and I agree that it really doesn't matter how a speech is given if it's given well, but I don't think it allows greater contact with an audience. It maybe looks that way if it's in a large setting, but when the camera is relatively close, I don't think it comes across as well.

Richard Wolf said that Obama believes his speeches are better when he uses a teleprompter. I agree, but I just get a slight feeling of inauthenticity when I see that a teleprompter is being used for nearly every speech.

He uses it for speeches short and long. He used it to introduce a cabinet member and they had to keep raising it and lower it when going between the member and Obama. He repeated the same line twice in a stump speech he gave millions of times because the teleprompter wasn't fast enough. It frankly makes him look, well, stupid.

Using it shows that you can not think for yourself. It shows you have no ability to memorize a speech. It shows you have no idea what in the hell you are even saying but just reading what some one else wants you to say. It shows that there are others who are smarter then the one giving the speech and the one giving the speech is supposed to be the knowledgable one aren't they?

It just shows that you dumber then a box of rocks.

when the prez of the USA cant even communicate without having his words sent to him on a tv is sad and humiliating. plus he keeps breaking them. how many now? even the VP broke one. poor obama couldn't make a speech for hours till they got a new one. the VP was in deep doo doo for that one. i mean c'omn just yesterday the prompter told him to say he met his wife in school.what a lie. then the clean up crew came in and admitted they met at work. i think obama is a robot and needs instructions 24 7

I don't agree with this.

How many presidents memorize the speeches they give nearly every day they're in office? I think the answer would be: None or almost none. If you know better than me, please let me know.

Have you seen what it actually says on the teleprompter?
How do you know that it doesn't have the President's list of points to cover?

All the people that whine about the teleprompter most have forgotten about
the last great republican speaker "George W. Bush"
