Try the underground economy. There is a lot of cash work "under the table" and barter that some of my friends have been doing to survive. One has gone from real estate to home repairs under the radar. Keeps him and his family fed and clothed. Thankfully he was smart enough to buy a cheap home years ago and has no mortgage and low property taxes. I love it because the Government will not get any income tax from him, while in years past they got over 4,000.00 a year.
I am not unemployed....
I AM underemployed as my hours were cut back to 30 hours a week...something those who just look at the U-3 figures gloss over.
Great! Perfect opportunity for you to get additional education in your extra time, so that you're more employable. Or, plenty of time in which to pick up a second job.
Personally I don't care if you're employed or unemployed -- you're saying that there aren't jobs out there to be had, and making excuse after excuse as to why one can't find a job, and I'm calling shenanigans on it because it's just not true.
But...but...but... that's a SOCIALIST benefit.
"We don't need not stinkin' Socialism!" - isn't that the type of thing YOU folks are always harping on - so CLEARLY the unemployed must not need that benefit. They just need to "stand on their own 2 feet and quit running to 'nanny" government for help"
Ken
Kind of hard to do when you've been chopped off at the knees.
Using age as an excuse is a cop-out. I stand behind my statement that if someone REALLY wants to work, there's jobs to be had.
I hope you never have to look for a job at age 58.
My father felt as you did, expressed it MANY times. Then he got laid off, at age 55. He hadn't even looked for a job in over 20 years. He never did get another full-time, permanent job. He was out of work for months at a time between 'consulting' jobs.
Or strip the house of anything valuable and sell it.
I believe when people are in dire straits this is considered understandable if not permissable.
Only if jail is one of your options - they will let you slide on the break and enter if they see you didnt damage, but they are going after the vandals now.

I'm 48. I just looked for and found two jobs in the space of ten days. And I'm in one of the highest unemployment areas in the USA.
Do exactly what you did in 1981, when the unemployment rate was this high. What happened in 1981 when this happened?
I was a carefree HS student in '81. What was done then?
