So I have been looking at the crime rate over the last 20 years...and guess what? it has been steadily going down since 1990. Then all of a sudden out of no where our economy fails and crime rates increase drastically.

Odd, It could just be coinsedance or it could be a way for the government to get more money...the #1 business in America is Private Prisons. There is money to be maid in crime...on both sides. But they'll make more if you get caught.

What do you think could there be a link? economic or political?

Just coincidence...Some wont like to read this because they're hell bent on believing that the sky is falling. Cities like D.C. are experiencing the lowest murder totals in two decades. I think the crack epedemic of the Reagan/Bush years has finally run it's course on a mass scale. Hopefully this "war" on drugs will soon cease and law enforcement resources can be more focused on public corruption and financial crimes. Those two crimes claim far more lives than drugs. Problem is, what bleed leads, and a drug crime is far more sensational than ole' Bernie sending thousands to the poor house or a Mayor ripping off his city.

this is one of the most absurd things posted by you. the reagan/bush years in DC? DC elected a crackhead democrat to be mayor. you have absolutely have no clue about DC. as crime rates drop in DC, they go up in other areas. the poor are being displaced in that area as all the money goes into the city.

Correct me if I am wrong, but was not the gun ban in DC over turned a few months back by the Supreme Court? Maybe the Crime Rate in DC is down because the citizenry is armed?

The number of murders were cut in half from 1995 to 2005, nothing to do with a law "may" have been passed few months ago. Drug dealers killed drug dealers in DC. Had nothing to do with citizens being armed or not.

I've never seen any data that says crime rates are lower in cities or states with less stringent gun laws.

I also doubt that lifting a gun ban has much effect on the number of people who own a gun.

Never been to DC - live no where close - I've no way of knowing whether gentrification is taking place or not. If it is, whats causing it?

I unlike YOU grew up IN D.C. during those years. The crime rate in all of the surrounding jurisdictions are also down. Barry wasn't a "nationwide" Mayor..Crack was an epedemic across the country and those two were in charge of the country and created the fictitional drug war.
