TheHill.com - Obama emphasizes education in NAACP speech

"The president warned the supportive crowd that "government programs alone won't get our children to the Promised Land."

"The president spent a great deal of his remarks pushing the need to close the education achievement gap, and he challenged black parents and neighbors to do more to help their children learn and achieve."

"We need a new mindset, a new set of attitudes – because one of the most durable and destructive legacies of discrimination is the way that we have internalized a sense of limitation; how so many in our community have come to expect so little of ourselves."

"I want them aspiring to be scientists and engineers, doctors and teachers, not just ballers and rappers. I want them aspiring to be a Supreme Court Justice. I want them aspiring to be president of the United States."

This surely doesn't sound like a guy that wants people to be reliant on the government for anything.

It was an excellent speech, extremely moving, particularly towards the end.

He said many things that needed to be said, and I am very proud that he is our President.

It was a terrific speech. He really is the best orator we have had in a good long time.

Well that's what it was, a speech. He's on a 4 year campaign trail.
Stir up emotions.

These people have always had an opportunity to do better. Obama's speech isn't going to change anything.

"Always", no..They actually were prevented(by law) from having an opportunity in the past. I'm sure you hope it wont.

Unfortunately what he says and what he is DOING are two very different things.

Did you listen too or read what he stated? I took that as, this President telling those very same people that your referencing, to get off their azz, stop depending solely on the government and help yourselves and your children. It needs to be said over and over again, but at the same time, accountability needs to be handed down.
