The US withdrew from Vietnam to give Jane Fonda her way? Prematurely? When LBJ in 1964 thought the war was pointless?
Do you know what they can't function? Because the US overthrows them! The US wants to control the resources in the region. A peaceful democratic government would never allow that. Only corrupt dictators would sell their country out to the US. So, that's who the US installs. The situations where there are dictators unfriendly to the US, that's a reaction to US foreign policy. It's about survival.
You might want to do some serious research. They do not function.
i dont think it is a lost cause at all, and General Petraisus is doing a good job with the surge. The President didnt promise easy going, and that it would be hard but we will prevail if we dont pansy out and give in to the loser left

The president is a failure, we wouldn't "pansy out" we would be correcting our HUGE error. I'm afraid we have had enough of the murderous right.

Maybe the little phony cowboy should've been busy planning instead of rehearsing his "Mission Accomplished" dog and pony show
I was just wondering does anyone here really think that Iraq isnt a lost cause.
Seriously, the situation just seems to be getting worse and worse.
Its amazing how some people truely think this religious, civil war can be won.
At this time it seems more like the goal should be trying to contain this stupid, costly mess that is going on in Iraq.
Its almost like people think this is a Basketball game and just by cheerleading the troops they will win against the opponent. Its amazing how simple some people think!
Sure it can be won, and very easily. But the way to win it is not politically or morally possible. you can:
1.) Bomb those insurgent areas into submission. Of course that will involve worldwide condemnation (political blowback) and involve numerous civilian casualties (morally objectionable).
2.) Increase troop presence, just blanket the insurgent areas with troops on every corner. This would involve possible a draft - again politically unacceptable.
3.) Wait them out. Most insurgencies in history last 7 or 8 years and just die out. Again, with the US "microwave culture" this is politically unacceptable. We want wars that are fast and bloodless. Doesn't matter that our casualty rate in 4 years is less than from one medium size WW2 battle.
This war is POLITICALLY lost, that's all. The US does not have the stomach for it. That's fine, lets learn our lesson, any tough fights we have in the future a president has to know that the only option is to appease the enemy. Some day we will learn better.

Of course you conveniently neglect to mention al Qaeda didn't operate in Iraq until we opened the door for them.
And I still have yet to hear exactly what will actually constitute victory in this mess? A demcraticalli elected, anti-American government? The necessity of having a presence for years to come?
