I have a friend who works at a Chevy dealership in Orlando - he seems to think this program will save (or at least lengthen) his job. I didn't read all the fine print on thisbut if it's saving jobs I'm for it
Not to be combative,...but the number is BILLION, like the link said. The program will be run until November 1, or until the money runs out,...which ever comes first. That's roughly 250,000 cars that the government will buy.
The government has already allocated $787 BILLION to "stimulate the economy",...and about 10% has been used. If Obama wanted to stimulate the economy, he would use the other 90% instead of keep it until he's up for reelection.
Nothing but politics. Follow the money,...most of it goes to groups who supported the democrats,...unions, and such. As goes the auto industry, so goes the unions. So much for "clunkers"....
Where does your second paragraph come from?
Would I be willing to buy a car for $15k;probably not, but if it were dropped to around $10k, the chances are greater that I'd purchase one. That is, if I lived in the US and not Germany.
It's always follow the money, but ... we don't know how well the stimulus will work yet, did the Bush portion work? And we're trillions in debt from a stupid war or two; not to mention human costs.
I say, bring our kids back and take care of people.
No war is worth it.

"Not to be political" and then call him "Algore" - methinks you are trying to pull the wool over our eyes.
What does Gore have to do with this policy?
Many people are going to get excited about this until they realize their vehicle will only get scrap value as a trade in.
Clincher is the trade in has to be demolished.
I thought our 16mpg 4WD light truck was a good candidate until I read that part.
Not worth giving up a possible $12,000(Edmunds) to get $4500.
Too bad for the mpg rules... its hard to find a car that gets less than 18 mpg and worth SIGNIFICANTLY less than 4500... I suspect many people won't be able to do it.. the program will probably be a bust...
