If you can jump through a lot of government hoops, you can save $4500 on trading in your "clunker" for a new car,....$9000 if you buy a Chrysler. Wonder what the government is going to do with approximately 250,000 pieces of iron after it rebates the dealer for them? Will the people who really need a new car be able to qualify for the program?

Chrysler Offers $4,500 as ‘Clunker’ Program Begins (Update1) - Bloomberg.com

It's just a billion dollars for a bunch of iron. One might suppose that it could have been used more wisely in some other capacity.

Doesn't seem to tough to get the credit:

Your vehicle must be less than 25 years old on the trade-in date
Only purchase or lease of new vehicles qualify
Generally, trade-in vehicles must get 18 or less MPG (some very large pick-up trucks and cargo vans have different requirements)
Trade-in vehicles must be registered and insured continuously for the full year preceding the trade-in
You don't need a voucher, dealers will apply a credit at purchase
Program runs through Nov 1, 2009 or when the funds are exhausted, whichever comes first.
The program requires the scrapping of your eligible trade-in vehicle, and that the dealer disclose to you an estimate of the scrap value of your trade-in. The scrap value, however minimal, will be in addition to the rebate, and not in place of the rebate.

My question is,...WHY?? Looks like the government is ready to burn a cool BILLION for no good reason. The people who this should help probably can't pay cash for the new vehicle, nor qualify for a loan for it either. Who benefits?

The same program is working quite well in Germany.
You can't say that it will be BILLIONS unless you know the numbers.
How many people are buying these vehicles?
Would you rather they sit on the lots unsold? Would you rather more people lose their manufacturing jobs?

Part of the reason they're doing it in Germany is for emissions.
The other is to stimulate the economy.
They care about the air here.

The people that this would help cannot afford the cost of a new vehicle. So it really will not help emissions all that much. Who in their right mind in this economy will trade in a vehicle that is paid for and take on a new payment? Also what is to stop the car dealers from upping the sticker price of the vehicle to cover this "credit".

Follow the Germans: “Cash for Clunkers” should emulate simpler ..
Quote:
Germany has instituted a clunker rebate system which is simple in execution and reportedly has had great success. The German program states that someone who owns a car nine years old or older qualifies for a discount on a new or late-model used vehicle. Apparently, the U.S. program will be much more complicated. (go figure)

In contrast with the German clunker program, which has resulted in 1.3 million new vehicle sales, the U.S. government has allocated only enough funds for 250,000 sales. That is about the equivalent of one week’s sales in the domestic market.
I know two dealers in town and they said the phone is ringing off the hook. Hopefully they will turn those calls into sales! I wish them lots of succe$$...

how do you measure success in this program????? the amount of taxpayer money wasted???? this is a program that has no possibility for success because nothing good comes of it.

Not to be combative,...but the number is BILLION, like the link said. The program will be run until November 1, or until the money runs out,...which ever comes first. That's roughly 250,000 cars that the government will buy.

The government has already allocated $787 BILLION to "stimulate the economy",...and about 10% has been used. If Obama wanted to stimulate the economy, he would use the other 90% instead of keep it until he's up for reelection.

Nothing but politics. Follow the money,...most of it goes to groups who supported the democrats,...unions, and such. As goes the auto industry, so goes the unions. So much for "clunkers"....

I have a friend who works at a Chevy dealership in Orlando - he seems to think this program will save (or at least lengthen) his job. I didn't read all the fine print on thisbut if it's saving jobs I'm for it
