Well, we saw it first hand last night. In many peoples minds, anything can be justified using relativity. In simple terms, for those that don't know, it goes something like this:
"Well yes I was speeding, but so was everybody else, and I rarely do it, so this time its ok."
Similarly, we see our president justifying actions not based on their exclusive merits, but rather on a relative scale to some abstract status quo.
For instance, in last nights speech, while speaking of the deficit, this is what President Obama said. Paraphrasing:
"We inherited a deficit of 1.3 trillion dollars. We went on to increase that deficit to 9.5 trillion. However, we also made adjustments to the budget we inherited and cut out 2 trillion dollars of waste, thus saving the tax payers money"
Um... seriously? That is like saying, I went to the bank and borrowed a million bucks when I was nearly bankrupt full well knowing that I can't repay the debt, but its cool because I have decieded to stop spending 20 bucks a month on beer. No, its not "cool".
Fact of the matter is, the 7.8 trillion dollar increase in the nations debt can not be offset or justified by the adjustments to the budget from previous administrations. This is relativity. This is a logical fallacy often used by individuals who know their actions are wrong but try and justify them anyway. The president is no exception to the idiotic nature of this argument.
I was thinking exactly the same thing while watching it.
It's like if I were out lighting houses on fire. "Well, officer, I DID light these four houses on fire, but I was going to light those two others on fire and decided not to. So in reality, I didn't light two houses on fire and should be praised, right?"
I really hope SOME of his supporters saw through that garbage, but I doubt it.
He's been saying garbage like this the whole time. It's always "well we were handed a 1.7 trillion dollar deficit, so we HAD to spend. But that's OK because we only spent about 7 trillion instead of the estimated 9 trillion, so we SAVED you 2 trillion dollars. Yay me."
Doesn't say WHOSE estimates and WHY they estimated that they'd have to mortgage our country to do so. Doesn't go into the fact that it's an idiotic idea.
It's just another PR campaign for the B.O. Administration, and a poor one at that. They're just trying to pat themselves on the back so they can keep the lemmings happy.
No common sense allowed though, because that would screw up the whole plan.
It's cheap political nonsense, to be sure. I didn't expect anything else. But as long as we aren't bombing Russia over Georgia or some other ridiculous thing, I don't regret voting for President Obama.
It's a failure of politicians, all politicians. It's been 30 years running it's a great number of them.
McCain would have done the same thing.
The people should give them all a good smack for spending without thinking.
