Kev...the water doesn't belong to GA. It's federal. The feds can give it to whomever they desire. That's the problem with a state giving up any authority or pwoer or proeprty to the feds. States have to consent to the feds owning any property in a state, be it a military base, a post office, or a park or forest. GA gave the feds that consent years ago to own that lake. They can try a theory states' rights people have long advocated...withdraw that consent, but make no mistake that will be a large legal battle. The feds once used force to stop a state from doing so before it ever went to court...know of Fort Sumter?
This should be a warning to other states to assert their right to not consent to the feds owning such things.
GA has had 200 years to fix that...too late. Just using property for 7 years in many states gives the illegal user title to it.
Go look up the history. They have tried since the 19th century. The problem is that Tennessee and Congress have to get involved, and as we see, anytime that's the case, nothing gets done.
This problem will end up at the SCOTUS if Congress fails to act. At the least, I would expect an injunction on the 3 year deadline and the status quo for years to come unless some kind of federal action is taken by Congress. No one is going to want to deal with the images and headlines as 4 million people have no drinking water and a HUGE reservoir sits full of water just miles away. You want to see Obama lose the Presidency in 2012, then lets have no action on Lanier by Congress.

What you will see is all Hell break loose! I hope it doesn't come to that but I am not going to take a shower once a week or buy bottled water so that people in Alabama can water their lawns and some stinking mussles in Florida can be happy. And I can tell you that there are many Georgians that will tell you the same thing!

Oh, come on KevK! Stop the bravado - the hyperbole
What needs to happen obviously is YOUR legislative bodies, YOUR Governor, YOUR US Senators and Representatives, need to sit down with their counterparts in the other states involved. There will need to be compromise. There will need to be give and take.
But frankly, attitudes like what you expressed are not helpful. They are, in fact, hindering reaching a compromise.
Yep, he was appointed by Reagan! Orders water shut off to the whole city of Atlanta so we can give our water to Alabama and Florida who neither need or deserve it. Another STUPID decision by a STUPID judge appoint by a Republican (Ronald Reagan)
3-year countdown begins for Atlanta's water future - Kansas City Star (http://www.kansascity.com/440/story/1338157.html - broken link)

We have been trying for 10 years to make a deal with these folks. They are just not reasonable. 2 Democrats tried to and the current Republican tried to. They think they should be entitled to 1/3rd the share of our water although we have population growth at 10 times that of Alabama or northern Florida. What we need is a formula that splits up the water on the basis of population- with each state getting xxx gallons per person. They have to understand that, if we cannot get the water we need in Atlanta, we are not going to be able to grow anymore and that will not be good for them either since we are the regions economic engine.

You know, I don't mean to be mean....BUT....you're not listening. Georgia HAS tried to get Alabama and Florida to come to the table to work things out. They aren't interested, that's why the suit was filed by them and why the Governor of Florida walked away from his agreement in 2007. They aren't interested in compromise because they like the status quo, and even more so now that the ruling is in their favor. They are behaving like children and its disgusting.
