The Untold Story Behind Rising Medical Costs « Giving Up Control

Hospitals make money off of each procedure that they perform. Despite the fact that they blame doing the procedures on defensive medicine they do it because they make money off of each test.

Having an X ray of your chest, which takes 5 minutes at the cost of $900. I agree that it is expensive, but why. You give no explanation as to why all of the procedures are expensive.

57,000 for knee replacement surgery. How do you explain that. It is performed in several hours. Why does it cost $57,000

The fact is that the cost of doctors is the smallest chunk of the cost, but it is certainly a factor.
The machines and the fact that they are in most hospitals. Under a UHC scenario those specialty or expensive machines will be "centrally" located. I'm sure you wouldn't mind the drive or forcing someone that is in a less densely populated area to bow down to your ideologies.

And? No I don't feel sorry for anyone, but I also wouldn't get a public defender unless I wanted to end up with the worst results. Oh yeah public defenders, aren't they government employees? Under the scenarios presented around these parts you'd push out choices in favor of...

Annual tuition and fees at state medical schools in 2008–2009 averaged $23,581 for state residents and $43,587 for non-residents. At private schools, tuition and fees averaged $41,225 for residents and $42,519 for nonresidents These figures do not include housing or living expenses. But don't let these costs discourage you. A wide array of grants and loans are available to those who are determined to get a medical education.

In 2008, the median debt was $155,000.

I want my doctors to be happy in their lifestyle. Would you want to go to the doctor that hates his job or feels he'll/she'll never get out of debt or make up the initial investment?

So the Doctors "motivation" is money. Sorry i thought people became Doctors to help the sick, not become mega rich.
When i was young we respected the Doctors 100% because they were not as greedy as the Doctors today. You actually felt that the guy in the white coat was thinking about your diagnosis and not what proceedure would earn him the most money. Healthcare was affordable and the system worked well. That was yesterday. Today we have greedy Doctors being encouraged by even greedier Insurance companies.
Doctors study hard to get where they are, so do millions of other Americans in tough jobs. Ask the poorly paid teachers or the poorly paid nurses, they do a fantastic job but don't get what they deserve. Cry me a river for these poor hard worked over payed Doctors. Do you think a New recruit in my outfit would fight less than a general because he gets paid less? Oh no it's just the Doctors who would refuse to work if they aren't earning big bucks.

I'd like to know why these things are so expensive too. A five minute, $900 x-ray?

I have no problem with paying for their college with government grants if they work at public hospital for 10 years at 100K a year. That seems fair.

Ironically, they were nearly always more productive in their previous roles.

Don't use one then. There are plenty of holistic treatment options available, as well as the overseas care we're speaking of.

Student loans and "early years" costs and privation are a fact of professional life. It took the Obamas years to pay back their student loans. Why do doctors feel they have to make it up in their first six months -- and by gouging it out of their patients? They invest, too, their incomes arent all salary.
