Texting has been shown to be way more distracting than all the other things people have mentioned (barring just being completely drunk).

My problem is that laws you can't enforce undermine your authority.

When texting, they can just check your phone records.

An 18 year girl who just graduated from HS, ran off the road near my home and was killed. Cause of accident - texting. They found the phone with a partial text on it, she was just getting ready to send it.

Was she wearing her seatbelt, ran off the road because in the middle of her texting a bee landed on her and she freaked out. Government knows they can tax or regulated something because they can "track it" if they could track your thoughts and radio they would. So be careful what you wish for and while it is said texting and driving is probably not a good idea. But that is the risk you take with just driving period and texting, changing the radio, taking your hands off the wheel and even having a arguement with your bf or gf in the seat next to you. Welcome to life and safety and life and death will come texting or not. Maybe she should have just no being texting and if there was a law do you think it should stop her?
Do you think seatbelt laws force something to wear a seatbelt?

The problem is that the laws and penalties are not strict enough when and if they are enforced. The same for drunk driving.

Is there nothing this Congress won't propose to take over all the states and limit their freedoms and sovreignty?

Sounds like a good idea to me. Half the people here can't make a coherent statement while sitting down, much less trying to drive.

no problem with states banning texting while driving ..... in fact, i think it's a fairly decent ideal, although very tough to enforce

i do have a problem with the federal gov't trying to strongarm the states into a ban though
