Does Cash For Clunkers Offer Support for Conservative Viewpoints?

No..The clunkers have admitted that Obama was borrn in Hawaii. The clunkers will not be invading any countries. Rich people don't usually own clunkers so they can't get a bogus tax cut. Clunkers don't racially profile. Clunkers don't make distinctions between "real America" and another America.

Best of all, clunkers don't quit half way through their term, that's how they become clunkers.

It is a great program, quickly put together, & victim of its own success, that pumps money into the economy quickly and stimulates production. They wrapped it up as 'cash for clunkers' to make it more palatable than a handout. If dealers took in eligible trade-ins it will work out for them in the end. The added bonus for consumers is that tax paid on new cars is a deduction on next April's tax filings.

I suspect it's main impact will be to move 2009 inventory making room for 2010 production. My local dealers are mainly depleting inventory and have little inventory to show prospective buyers. They won't get new inventory until the fall & the 2010 model year.

I thought about that as well when I heard that Toyota and Honda were part of the program. If they really wanna impress me they'll have a BOGO sale - I've been eyeing the new Ford Fusions for awhile now.

By Wednesday, 22,782 vehicles had been purchased and $96 million had been spent, and the program was out of money in days. Meanwhile, the spending from the stimulus package is slowly making its way throuugh the red tape and the vast majority of it has not been spent and will not be spent until 2010 and 2011.

Some car dealerships are now in a position of not knowing whether or not deals they made will be reimbursed. Some have stated that they have huge sums of money now at risk and have stopped with the program. Should they not get full reimbursement, they have lost money and now have the trade-ins that are wothless because they had to be destroyed. Congress must vote to see if they can get enough money to reimburse these dealers because they had not planned for this and there was no effective way of tracking the money and letting dealers know if the money was still there for the program.

Does this offer support for the position that the best way to stimulate the economy would be to give the money back to the taxpayers versus running it through the government process?

Does it demonstrate that the government's ability to run programs effectively is poor and that there are unintended consequences?

Discuss...
This program further demonstrates that Democrats have never read or care about the US Constitution. Once again they display their contempt for the Supreme Law of the Land and do whatever they feel like, regardless of the consequences. Congress critters that willfully ignore the US Constitution are as anti-American as they come, and the vast majority are always Democrats.

Cash for Clunkers is a smoke screen tactic. More of the same that got us in this mess. Give money to people who otherwise couldn't afford a new car to turn in a perfectly good car (they will not take cars that don't run) so that the buyer can take on debt he/she can't afford. The "green agenda" is a load of crap. Many of these newer cars don't get much higher mileage than the older ones, and if we're so concerned about overflowing landfills, waste, and promoting economy and not trading in things every so many years, then this program has its unintended consequences. And let's not forget that we didn't have the money before they gave it to the program. I mean, where did it come from? It was supposed to go through November and it's run out already? So let's throw 2 billion more we don't have to artificially inflate the auto industry. This isn't creating anything long term (except debt). Let's just have the govt pay us to buy all kinds of stuff. What a joke.

The finanicial incentive is what will allow them to afford these vehicles. The small improvement in mileage will go a long way in energy conservation when you look at the volume of cars being swapped out. Each of these cars would've ended up in landfill anyway. This way they don't rot on some street corner abandoned and become a community eyesore. Each car sold is an added benefit to the economy and the environment. Win, win all the way around.

You don't know much about modern junkyards do you? Or rather auto "reclamation" or "recycling" centers. They don't "end up in landfills".

Used Auto Parts, Junk Yards Online and Used Car Parts

After being stripped the cars are crushed and sent to a mini mill for remelting and reforming into washers, dryers and razor blades.
The rubber is recycled and many times becomes part of an asphalt mix for roads and parking lots (glass is mixed in also for parking lots) and liquids are drained and recycled. Recycled rubber is also being used as a soft playground mulch. Real expensive to buy but lasts forever.

If junk cars were pigs everything but the squeal would be used.
