I'd be grateful if they just shut up. But then, I doubt that they could give a straight, sincere apology. They couldn't stuff the crazy down long enough to pull it off.
If they do apologise, what else will they do with their free time (which seems to be indefinite). I will be indefinitely grateful to them if they just shut up.
I don't know if I'd expect an apology from the "birthers" as you call them. If there was not so much supposed evidence out there to support their theory, this would never have been an issue. It is a worthy pursuit to ensure the leader of your country passes all standard qualifications for his office. The fact that it does seem they were wrong doesn't make them stupid or ignorant. It simply means this pursuit for truth may have been misguided. Those who guided these claims are the ones who owe the apology, because they are the ones who kept feeding the flames.
And yes, there are some who just kept hanging on because they simply didn't want Obama as president. But I believe some were actually just looking for the truth, and those have more or less been satisfied by the evidence provided.
However, there will always be a few who still talk about the BC issue for years to come because frankly, once a rumor is started it's hard to ever really get rid of it for good. A question about Obama's citizenship has been posed, and no amount of evidence will ever be good enough for some people because they will continue to think the evidence was fabricated. And since that is a possibility,(not saying that happened, just saying it is a possibility) especially when a person has the sort of power Obama has, there will always be doubt for some.
So no, I don't think the "birthers" owe an apology. But those who now accept his citizenship should admit as much. And those who still doubt should search for some real evidence before questioning his status again. And either way, the man is the president, and he isn't going anywhere for atleast the next 3 1/2 years.
PS. I'd much prefer an apology from the Bush Administration for lying to us in order to start a war.
