Yeah, the Iraq war was such a financial success for the USA and there were hardly reprecussions from that. I didn't mind my tax dollars paying Blackwater, Hell-iburton and the thousands of other no bid contractors, did you? Moron, shortsighted, right wingers.

The program borrows money so that we can pay dealerships to destroy the used vehicles and salvage parts that the poorest American desperately need so that other Americans can purchase vehicles built in Japan, Korea and Mexico because governmet involvement in the pro-UAW reorganization of GM and Chrysler did nothing to lower their labor costs keeping the sale small cars unprofitable for them. So now we have added to the US debt, increased the cost of used vehicles for the poorest Americans, rewarded the greed of the UAW and incentivised the purchase of foreign vehicles.
Obama wanted to get people buying again and back in the dealer showrooms while at the same time lowering foreign oil consumption. There is no doubt that the program has been a smash hit with buyers. Ford dealers around Atlanta are using terms like "swamped" and one of them is staying open until 1AM to handle the crush of customers. He said that his entire on lot inventory of the Ford Escape dissappeared in 3 days!
Obviously as the Obama recovery begins to take hold, the program will not be necessary anymore but for now it is doing wonders for the economy. That is probably why the Republicans are grumbling so much about it. But they don't have the votes to stop it because some Republicans are close to the dealerships and the business and they will vote to keep it!

OK, he had me for the first minute or two, until he started commentating. How does he get from "While you are logged in" to "everything in your house belongs to the government"?
WASHINGTON - "Cash for clunkers" could have the same effect on global warming pollution as shutting down the entire country — every automobile, every factory, every power plant — for an hour per year. That could rise to three hours if the program is extended by Congress and remains as popular as it is now.
An analysis by Macroeconomic Advisers forecasts that the program will affect only the timing of car sales, not total sales: “In particular, we expect that roughly half of the 250,000 in new sales would have occurred in the months following the conclusion of the program, and the other half would have occurred during the program period anyway. Therefore, we do not expect a boost to industry-wide production (or GDP) in response to this program.”
In other words, the program gets much of its juice via stealing car sales from the near future rather than generating additional demand. In practice, it works much like tax policies and subsidies to encourage women to have more children. Studies have found that women may have children earlier than they would otherwise, but they don’t necessarily have more kids.
whatever. I wouldn't expect most of you to admit that an Obama plan was working no matter what it was. You just don't have it in you.
