A former US president is able to do in one day what the current US president (with the help of the former's wife) couldnt do in four months. Foreign policy experience anyone?
No, but I think it's entirely possible that what he got out of the deal was (1) personal attention from a famous ex-U.S. president and (2) a chance to look kind and reasonable when he's usually described as mean and crazy.
What do you think he got out of the deal? I'm really not being argumentative--just curious.
My opinion/assumptions only, but I'd say he got to get the greater international community off his a** over a couple of girls he really couldn't care less about, while also "saving face" by "pardoning" them for their crime and not having to actually deal directly with the U.S. or its official agents.
And that new sherif is a fluffer. That's exactly what the prez is doing.
Clinton in N.Korea is fitting, as it was himself and Albright who gave the n.koreans the lightwater reactors to create fissionable material which resulted in their nuclear armament. I would think the n.koreans owed Clinton at least one.
“It comes perilously close to negotiating with terrorists,”
Bolton told AFP when asked about Bill Clinton’s trip to secure
the release of journalists Laura Ling and Euna Lee. [...]
“I think this is a very bad signal because it does exactly
what we always try and avoid doing with terrorists, or
with rogue states in general, and that’s encouraging
their bad behavior,” Bolton said.
Maybe Bolton didn't get the memo but there is a new Sheriff in Town. The Repugs are no longer in power...
Bolton should have told that to the families and friends of the hostages.
The fact that a Clinton visit resulted in the release of two people just irks the right wing to great proportions.
Or we could go by Reagan's example (you like Reagan, right?) and just straight-out sell the offending regime weapons - it got Oliver North a TV show and everything: Iran–Contra affair - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
It was a mistake. We've just sold our soul to the devil.
Agreed.
Diplomatic visits, whether official or not, legitimize these dictators and their truly evil regimes. These visits tend to do nothing but bolster the power of these madmen.
Those journalists, sad as their situation is, had no business recklessly and illegally entering North Korea. They messed up but why must we all pay for it now with an even more dangerous North Korea thanks to a Clinton injection of international legitimacy?

Yea, he is really "injecting legitimacy" into that regime, I guess the tourism industry really is going to boom now and the rest of the world will think Kim Jong Il is one cool dude.
Bush ignored this regime to go after Saddam Hussein. He knew he'd get his ass kicked if he tried that with N. Korea
