Actually, probably not. Most people who sneak into the US are not caught or detained.

All of this only means that other countries are better at securing their borders than we are but the premise remains. We don't just allow people in. As both of you indicate, they sneak in and are not caught.
I don't think the issue is that another country is holding 3 of our citizens for illegal entry. If Germany caught some hippies trying to hike in illegally, they would hold them, we'd call them idiots, say sorry, send'em back.
The issue is Iran caught them, awful move on the hikers' part. We currently have high tension with Iran (just like with NKorea) and may need to go to greater lengths to get them back (like send in Slick Willy and/or promise them something we wouldn't normally want to give them).
When we get these 'hikers' back, Obama should personally get to punch them in the stomach.
I heard about this a day or two ago and IIRC, they are all recent graduates of Berkeley with majors in Arabic and Arab studies and such. Now, if they are typical Berkeley students, I'm sure they were over there trying to soak up some diversity or some such nonsense, but we will have a hard time convincing Iran that three Americans, who have studied their culture and were caught hiking into thier country, aren't spies.
Apologizing to Pyongyang cost us God knows how much. Do you think these despots do anything for free? Especially in a situation like this? Whatever Tehran asks for will be huge. And these weren't lost hikers on holiday. They were activists that were nosing around where they had no business leaving the US in a position of weakness with a real mess to clean up. They need to be brought home, charged and imprisoned here.

Like I said, hippies. Iran would undoubtly be very suspicious of anyone like this, as they have never experienced these type of people because they have not been free for a long time. Their idea of a radical leftist we call facists pigs here.
Unfortunately, that's not ALL he feels....and in an intensely conservative, almost 'prudish' society, what a foreign male 'feels' can sometimes lead to explosive misunderstandings.
