groar asked and Id like to know too -- what if you're writing a letter and you dont know the addressee's marital status? (And why the hell should you?)
Somehow we managed okay before the word "Ms." appeared.
This is obviously not a case of slander or libel, since no damage was done to Sarah Palin.
I don't think you or I are in any position to make that determination actually. That would be a question, based on facts and testimony, for a court to decide.
Now, it may be your OPINION that no damage was done - but, that is all it is - your opinion, which of course carries no legal weight.
You know what? You are right. I can't stand Palin at all either but I was a bit upset over hearing that someone spread lies about her and her husband divorcing.
That was downright uncalled for and not needed. Bash her politics. Not her marriage. I would be so offended if someone spread a lie that me and partner were no longer together, let alone divorcing!
That was uncalled for completely. Pick on her politics-not her family.
news flash: that 'someone' is same idiot blogger referenced by the OP that you've been rabidly defending throughout this thread
Freedom of speech is one thing. Lies, slander and defamation of character is another. The intent to do harm to an individual makes it illegal.
Freedom of speech is the right to speak out against policies, programs, etc. of the government (for example) without fear of retribution by the government for voicing your opinion publicly.
Apparently, the current occupant of the White House thinks this is okay as long as you are speaking out against Republicans, but when people begin to speak out against his policies, and his administratio, and the current Democrat congress, those people are now "angry mobs", being "organized" (this from the "community orgainzer" turned president) by the Repulican Party, Fox News (yes, Fox has been blamed too) Rush Limbaugh and other conservatives.
But those who run smear campaigns against Sarah Palin, are free to do their evil, and Obama and the Democrats couldn't care less.
Actually, smart one-it goes both ways. You guys have no problem bashing Obama but if anyone says anything against your precious Palin, it is the end of the world.

To the contrary "SMART ONE" -
This thread is about Palin going after someone for posting lies. Nothing more.
If Obama wants to do the same - I, and many others, would support him just the same
Besides, no one called Obama a terrorist. He is however (or was, maybe still is) a Muslim, he made certain terrorists his friends (at least one that we know of, William Ayers, but according to his own book, there were probably others), and he (again, from his book) was an admirer of Marx, and he hung out with Marxists. His policies are socialist.
I would say he is a scum bag, and a slime ball (those are simply adjectives, and it is not libelous or slanderous).
But what they have done to Sarah Palin is very definitely slander; making up stories that are untrue about her, her family, etc., etc., for the sole purpose of damaging her politically.
If you cannot see the difference here, perhaps you need to go back to school. The difference is obvious.
People have called him a terrorist. Go look it up from those McCain/Palin rallies. People were shouting "Hang him".
Really? You think it is ok to call Obama a scumbag and slime ball? What you guys did (and still do) to Obama is very much slander too. You were making up stories up about him too-like the birth thing, the whole terrorist Muslim thing, the whole being racist thing. Those were all untrue and for sole purpose of damaging him politically.
In your eyes, it is ok to say anything about Obama. That is not slander. But if anything is said against Palin, it is slander.
There is no difference. If you cannot see that , maybe YOU need to go back to school.

First off - it is really clear you do not know the legal meanings of slander and libel.
That said - no one has standing to sue for those things EXCEPT FOR the aggrieved party - in what you are describing - Obama. He has the right to, if he wishes, to go after the parties who are making such statements - you don't. You can't charge someone with slander or libel because you are not the aggrieved party.
No one here is supporting Palin and not supporting Obama.
What IS BEING SUPPORTED is Palins right to sue. As we would also support Obama's right.
Can't you understand this?
