Democrat congressmen who support President Obama's agenda for government-run health care, are running into a LOT of contrary opinions at the Town Hall meetings they normally hold during their August recess.

Their response?

In at least one case, a congressman has stopped holding town hall events because the situation has spiraled so far out of control.

“I had felt they would be pointless,” Rep. Tim Bishop (D-N.Y.) told POLITICO, referring to his recent decision to temporarily suspend the events in his Long Island district. “There is no point in meeting with my constituents and [to] listen to them and have them listen to you if what is basically an unruly mob prevents you from having an intelligent conversation.”
Sort of reminds me of a scene in the farce "Monty Python and the Holy Grail", where a bunch of the king's knights walk up to a cave, intending to kill an seemingly-innocuous rabbit-like creature. It suddenly rises up and goes after them, cutting off heads right and left. And their response? Panic, chaos, "Run awaaaaayyy!!! Run awaaaaaay!!!"

Well, mission accomplished for the astroturfers.

Making it impossible to conduct orderly political meetings - now, there's something to be proud of.

Not impossible, just worrisome. Having to answer constituents who disagree with you... especially when you find you can't marshal any reasonable arguments in support of your indefensible agenda... is apparently more than these Democrat congressmen can handle.

For a convenient excuse, use "They forced me!"

With all the savages that are attacking these congressmen/women
I'm glad that they are cancelling them.

We all know that when these people get like this, there's one that is a little crazier than the other one and thinks wants to "fix" things with his arsenal.

You dont' understand what is occuring at these "meetings" do you?

The congressmen aren't being given the CHANCE to respond. They are being talked over whenever they attempt to respond... Maybe if these people would say their peace, and THEN give the congressman a chance to address it, we could have town hall meetings and actually DISCUSSIONS on the plan, but no...... THAT isn't what the Right wants here... They want to squash all discussion on the issue.

Look what happens when they stop stocking the 'town halls' with partisan supporters and prearranged questions.

Cowards, one and all.

Try peddling that to someone who hasn't watched the videos. They're not there to debate, they're there to disrupt. If people can't be civil, the meetings are pointless.

So, that's one political avenue, destroyed. Great work, guys.

Nothing to be cheerful about. Certainly not the huge victory some here seem to think it is.

It's sad that because of a bunch of ill-behaved loudmouths who refuse to allow anyone else to get a word in edgewise, peaceful public discussions of such an important issue now need to be halted.

Furthermore, it's equally sad that people such as the OP are actually obtuse enough to blame the congressmen for the immature, disruptive actions of the morons who are harassing and talking over said congressmen and other non-disruptive constituents, to the point that the town hall meetings have become useless, uncivil, one-sided screaming matches.

Interesting how you you bolded what you did and and not that conditional clause that contextualizes that comment.

"There is no point in meeting with my constituents and [to] listen to them and have them listen to you if what is basically an unruly mob prevents you from having an intelligent conversation.”

I know intelligent conversation doesn't interest you, but it is generally the aim of town hall meetings, and, if that aim is being thwarted in such a way that that aim becomes impossible to achieve, another means for intelligent exchange has to be found.

P.S. How about reading through some threads before creating duplicates, though I have little hope that this will prevent it, given the reading abilities demonstrated in the OP.

Except that there is no conversation to be had with these people. How do you answer someone who has no other agenda than to scream provocative nonsense? They don't want answers and they want to make sure no one else gets any either.
