"Yankee" was originally a fairly bad word in the King's country back in the American Revolution days. look it up....funny stuff.
I have heard the word “yankee” used as a pejorative in the south, meant to be every bit as offensive as the “n” word.
The reason that the word “cracker” is not taken as negatively by whites as the “n” word by many blacks is BC of the balance of power. Just as calling a black adult male “boy” is seen as more offensive than calling a white adult man “boy”. The terms are meant to offend and put one in one’s place. When someone feels that their place is in the majority, those words don’t have the same effect.
It’s been my experience that those whites most offended by being called "cracker" tend to be in the lower socioeconomic group. This is a generalization and there are exceptions, of course. But black friends of mine who are middle or upper middle income, while they find the “n” word offensive, consider the source and don’t get bent out of shape about it. Conversely, I have worked with whites that have considered being called “cracker” to be fighting words.
Oh, and I agree with the others here- if the OP has been called "cracker" fifty times lately, he must be a real cracker
