I'm fairly safe in assuming you will not be electing to take part in any new form of health care. So why in the hell do you care if you're not going to use it? For those who don't have health care, this will be a great option, regardless if you think it "works" or not. Not a tough concept.
Maybe you're not getting the "concept" that a government option will drain the premiums from private insurers to the point of bankruptcy. Not a "tough concept" for most people to understand.

Obviously, Hawaii is doing something right. I don't know if you can compare the two states because Massachusetts has some of the nation's highest health costs and Hawaii has the lowest.
