Who are these yutzes pretending to be elected officials at these townhall meetings?
Seriously, you get them into a debate with some working stiff, soccer mom, senior citizen, or even some angry goofball and they get their a**es handed to them and they make fools of themselves. They'll get torn apart in the next elections. At least Obama's handlers were smart enough to have fake meetings where he was protected and had zero risk of being humiliated.

to paraphrase the godfather part two:
"Obama is our president, and a lot of people love him. But he's weak and he's stupid, and this is life and death."
Too bad Maureen Dowd's "shiny happy people holding hands" can only be found in a contrived audience at obama's healthcare forum.

Must be something in the water. Here's the story of a Republican plant at a town hall who claims, "'I'm just a mom from a few blocks away, not affiliated with a political party."

Impersonating a doctor is far far worse, as you appear qualified to address the issue.
While I'm a registered Republican, I silently endorsed Obama (would NEVER vote for the guy) by bashing McCain. BIG TIME remorse for being so stupid. Besides, she wasn't stumping for McCain.

You're assuming that people are open to having their minds changed at these discussions. I highly doubt that.
But let's say the expertise claim is more egregious in the doctor example, the fact is is that both actions in both situations manipulate and undermine democratic practice, which is certainly the greater issue. And unfortunately, it is likely that attendee misrepresentations is a chronic tactic at these town halls on both sides.
