Default U.S. Colleges Say DON'T HIRE U.S. Students!

Even the college you graduated from says that you should not be hired! The foreign students are better and the cost less. And they pay little taxes! Somebody please tell me this is a lie!

Slashdot News Story | US Colleges Say Hiring US Students a Bad Deal

I am not really surprised that colleges and universities would do this as this has become the new American way. For years, politicians on both sides of the aisle have had to pay back big business and other special interests by voting for increasing visas for foreign workers so the companies could get cheap labor. Even during the economic downturn there are politicians who want to grant more visas to foreigners. There are plenty of unemployed Americans who work in IT, etc. who have lost their jobs to the insourcing of foreign workers. If our politicians refuse to do anything about this during an economic downturn then I doubt they will ever do anything about it. Whenever I contact my representatives about this I get the lies that they don't have enough Americans to do the work. BS. The foreigners are not "better" they cost less. It is economics and greed pure and simple.

This is just an expansion of big business policy. This is why nothing is made in the U.S. any more. Its cheaper to exploit someone overseas that won't fight for some rights and will work 12-14 hours in a sweatshop. Same basic idea.

Tthe free market at work.

I know the ski resorts here in VT like to bring in foreigners because they pay them little, and save on taxes, even while the job situation here is quite bleak...

I read the notice. It is meant to provide information to employers on the requirements involving the hiring of international students, as federal laws regarding employment of non-citizens have changed. It's not meant to say international students are a bargain.

I don't see how this can be viewed as a subversive memo, but then again I never saw the Holy Mother's image on a grilled cheese sandwich either.

That article is just skewing the motive behind this document. Here is the actual document: http://www.ois.pitt.edu/pdf/HiringIn...alStudents.pdf

It's a document from The University of Pittsburgh Office of International Services titled "What Employers Should Know About Hiring International Students".

It starts out: "Many employers are concerned about liability related to the employment of international students in the United States due to changes in federal laws governing non-citizens. This handout is provided by the Office of International Services (OIS) at the University of Pittsburgh to address concerns employers might have about international students and work."

The piece of information your article focused on is only one of many facts discussed in the handout; and that is all it is, a fact. You're not in favor of universities hiding facts in a handout designed to address them, are you? It's not the university's fault that this is the way the tax law is.

It is not the place of the university to encourage employers to hire one group of people over another regardless of the law- which BTW is retarded if an amployer does not have to pay SS tax for a foreign national. What if they said "we have lots of minority females and if you hire them over minority males, you will get 2 points on your affirmative action goals vs just one with a minority male" can you imagine the HELL that would break loose?

I think it is a great article. Get mad all you want it is just pointing out a fact. It is much cheaper, because of two socialist programs

Medicare and Social Security

Since I'm a proponent of getting rid of these two, i say it just fueled the fire for me, because i never even looked at it that way.

You want a more competitive America get rid of these programs, because the students that you won't hire, probably won't receive the benefit!

Great Article!!

Down with Medicare and down with Social Security

Let's help our small businesses out, so they'll want to hire more US college students!!!

A geat example of how government interference has distorted the price of a US college student

Back to the basic econ class

Remember

Suppliers of jobs are willing to hire more individuals at less

Demand for jobs increases when suppliers are willing to pay more

Note

Shortages of jobs exist when the government mandates a price increase that is above what the individual would fetch on the free-market

The government through their own coercion has made college students more expensive!!

Thanks Uncle Sam!!! For creating a price floor and shortage of jobs for college students!

My dad has this problem with his small business. He wanted to higher American college students, but he couldn't hire them to full time work, because of the social security and medicare tax, not to mention health care cost etc. He could hire two H1 Visa Indian workers for half the price due to social security and pay them the wage he wanted to.

For instance

1. American College student i want to pay 35k (but oh wait i have to pay an addtional 2,450 a year because of SS and Medicare)

2. I can hire an H1 visa worker with more experience for 35k and not pay the additional 2,450

Now, you're saying, but it is only an additional 2,450, but it adds up over say you need and would like to higher 10 new college grads at that price well you guessed it

2,450 *10 = 24,500 (that you are being racketeered to pay out for their retirement)

now say you hire 10 H1 Visa (well you guessed you have a company savings of 24,500, which could be the 24,500, that keeps you afloat for a few more years, until you're solidly able to expend and pay the government inflated cost of hiring American workers)

Don't get angry at the business community for wanting to survive and own their own business for another year
