I think the Viet Nam War era was a very divisive time, probably worse than now.
I believe you are correct. The country was much more divided then.
Instead of showing bipartisanship as to healthcare, Rachel Maddow voiced a different opinion: The heck with the conservatives. No matter what you give them, they aren't going to vote for the bill anyway. Plus, the Democrats may have the votes to pass the bill on their own.
Your side are the ones that descided to divide away from the majority when they lost the election, President Obama did nothing to divide Americans, your side was say this same thing before he was even sworn in and I am sure will continue to, it is part of the righthanded game plan, very obvious. Find better candidates, have some real plans to address the issues, then MAYBE you will stand a chance any other plan will fail.

I love the Left's new found confidence after this past election. Bush was such a complete idiot that the Democrats went ahead and snatched defeat from the jaws of victory by nominating two top notch candidates in Gore and Kerry.
Nonsense the country was more divided in the 60's and the protests were much more violent than now.God;teh number of liberal urban terrorist groups back then was unbeliveable. Riots and portest at many colleges and many riots in detroit.chicago and watts that burn large sections of the towns down. The 68 democratic convention was on the news every night with lotting;burning and gun fire.
To try and compare the seething unrest that erupted into the race riots of the 60's or the Vietnam protests to the Liberal vs Conservative conflicts of the present time is what is nonsense. Watts was not symbolic of a country divided anymore than Kent State was symbolic of a country divided. Elements of the U.S. demographic, minority elements at that (students are a minority) with specific issues to address are not the same as the entrenched divisions of Liberals and Conservatives which cut across age, race, religion, class and other lines.
I am a Southerner and I find what you said very disturbing b/c it is simply untrue.
I am stunned you would somehow twist discussions about healthcare insurance into racism.
Surely you don't really think that folks would be in favor of - or opposed to - something as general as healthcare b/c of prejudice against black people? That is beyond absurd. Really.
So when the country was screaming in opposition to healthcare reform under Clinton, it was b/c of racism?
Sadly, Mike is very much correct. Not just racism though but also classism, xenophobism and self interestism. Humanity has lost the inbuilt urge to protect one another that allowed Homo sapiens to prevail against Homo neanderthal and Homo cro magnon. Why? Because there were no racial differences yet then. Once we differentiated into races each race helped itself and had little interest in helping others. All European countries established UHC while they were still majority French, German, Italian, Swedish, Dutch or whatever. Now when they have foreign elements that immigrate they are offered UHC if they qualify for citizenship. The U.S. has its origins in conflict between the Native Americans and the Mexicans. It has the legacies of Slavery. It has the emerging class warfare as the income distribution widens to astounding dimensions. No group wants any other to benefit at its expense.
Opposition to UHC doesn't come from any reasoned economic concerns but from raw emotion fueled by hate. That's why the Town Hall meetings have been circuses. This is likely the last chance for America and the Conservatives are blowing it. You didn't like America the way it was and there has always been strong arguments to adopt a UHC in the face of ever rising healthcare costs. Now all of a sudden no one wants it? Fine. Just remember that the four ugliest words in the English language are: "I told you so".

Don't you mean last two elections, the Demos took the House and Senate first, then the Whitehouse, i would say they should be confident, at least for now. Gore and Kerry, I voted for one and against the other, but being a Texan I already knew Bush was not the sharpest knife in the draw, he wasn't much of a Gov so hsi lack of talent came as no surprise. Now the repubs should take your advice and stay away from the likes of Palin, her chances would be even less than Gore or Kerry, find someone of quality, McCain ain't it, someone with real ideas on the issues, not just rhetoric and whining.
