it doesnt represent slavery. its called a REBEL flag for a reason. it shows how the people in the us can revolt and try to make a new government. second the civil war wasnt about slavery. it goes to show that if you never lived there then dont talk about it

Why is the South so obsessed with the Confederate flag?
Because racist, intolerant, ignorant liberals keep trying to ban it or take it away from them.

No, it is not symbolic of the South. It is the symbol of racism. Until the civil rights movement got moving in the 1950's, it was a dying flag, but once intergration started it was added to several southern state's flags. The South is composed of whites, blacks, asians, hispanics, gays, lesbians and this flag only represents white throwbacks who we now know have DNA from another species - Neanderthals. So it is the flag of genetic throwbacks.

Oh get real, I am a native southerner and it was all about an economic system based on slavery. It is the flag of treason. To quote the Farewell Speech of the then Senator of La., Judah P. Benjamin, and who was then Sec. of State, Sec. of War and Acting Attorney General of the CSA: "Traitors! Treason! Ay, sir, the people of the South imitate and glory in just such treason..." 2/4/1861.

This theme was repeated over and over again. It was a war of treason to preserve slavery.

Southern doctors even had a medical term for slaves who wanted their freedom - drapetomania. Slavery was the basis of the Southern religious and economic systems and even perverted their medical system.

Anyone who believe that the Civil War was all about slavery, have no understanding of history. Watch the 2003 movie "Gods and Generals," and you will start to understand.

its a reminder. bek the feds really jerked them around in 1860. massive tariffs on cotton sales to england which is totally unconstitutional. this is, btw the reason for the revolt.
the revolt was an ill planned and futile attempt to protest federal abuse.
the south paid dearly for this attempt.
kinda reminds you of john mcain and AZ doesnt it?

Get real, yourself! The context in which Benjamin made that remark was in line with what Patrick Henry said as the prelude to the American Revolution. "It this be treason, then make the most of it."

The Southern states, in seceeding, only wanted to seperate themselves from a political connection with the northern states (who kept the name United States only by default), NOT from ideals of the DOI nor Constitution (largely written by Southern men).

Then why did even most of the Lower South states mention other reasons than slavery? (for example, Georgia the unfair tariffs, Texas the lack of protection for settlers along the frontier, etc) Why did none of the Upper South states list slavery as a reason for secession at all?

Treason? Even the northern powers of the time later admitted they could not make a case for treason, lest it make fools of themselves in open court.

No, they didn't. The term was something that a certain Dr. Samuel Cartright came up with. It was NEVER a common term in the least with "Southern doctors" (read the memoirs).

Medical system has been addressed. If you are saying that the Southern economy was dependent to a large degree on slave labor at the time, then it would be foolish to argue that such does not have some truth to it. But...there is a flip side often ignored. To wit: The slave trade itself was a purely northern commodity. And northern industrial concerns -- even after slavery itself was (gradually) abolished -- had no qualms at all about making good money indirectly off Southern products produced by slave labor.

My my...what an impressive display of ranting and raving.

You seem didactic in lecturing everyone on that the South is composed of many different groups...both racial and ethnic. This is hardly a state secret. At the same time, are you aware that, according to mainstream public opinion polls, most minority groups in the South have no personal problem with the Confederate Flag in the sense of being "offended" by it? This is not to say they hold it in high historical esteem...just that they don't get all up in arms about it one way or another. Live and let live, perhaps...?

The ones that seem most hysterical over the issue are not black Southerners at all. But the opportunists -- both black and white -- who make a good living off stirring up racial discord, and simply using the Confederate Battle Flag as one of many stalking horses.

I never cease to be amazed -- and get a real kick out of -- how people like you -- who probably fancy yourself so "tolerant" are actually the least tolerant and totally closed-minded in existence. Neanderthals. Genetic throwbacks, huh? Is THAT your idea of intelligent and articulate discouse?
