Hey Scooter, maybe next time you should get your facts straight first, then you can distort them as much as you wish...

The Associated Press, using data supplied by the US Census Bureau, found that the highest divorce rates are to be found in the Bible Belt.

Umm I don't know who "Scooter" is but as you admonish him to get his facts straight, I certainly feel you could get a little more current data than 2004!

Grasping at straws to defend this one, huh? And yes, I'm sure the statistics have changed so dramatically over the past 3 years. (You act like I posted an article from 1961 or something!) We all know how the south makes social adjustments in leaps and bounds... ha ha.

Is that your answer to the request for current data, to deflect with the grasping at straws response? I think it is a valid request
And I am skeptical of the source-the Boston Globe patting itself and the city on it's back! The Globe certaintly is slanted a bit.

Whoops. How about an article from a Alabama newspaper?
Merry Christmas, Spunky.
Red state depravity
04-24-2006
Much has been made out of the red state/blue state division in the country today. And no small part of the chest beating in red states has involved the frequent assertion, by both clergy and laity, that red states, with their focus on the family and conservative values, enjoy some sort of moral superiority over more liberal blue states.
Which is why a recent analysis by The American Prospect magazine should not be ignored by those of us who live in the red states, for it offers us a dose of reality that should make us pause before we wrap ourselves in a cloak of self-righteousness.

Out of everywhere, I have to say the town of Fort Smith, Arkansas (Pop 80,000) takes the crown for conservatism. About 1 out of 2 cars in any parking lot has some form of conservative bumper sticker (Bush/Cheney, religious, anti-gay, etc). If you don't support Bush here, you better keep it to yourself. Our mayor is a leader in the local church, and is elected every time based on that religiousity. Our radio dial has 8 religious stations. There aren't any so-called "Progressive churches" in this town. There is one Catholic church thats about as progressive as you are going to find. Most of the population is some shade of Baptist or Pentacostal/Assembly of God. You would be lucky to make it out alive here if you were gay. Our town was the #5 city for job loss in the nation in 2006, yet the citizens refuse to accept any alternative means to bring jobs to the town because it might bring sin into the town. The mayor organizes HUGE events to protest development. Back in the 90s, the city would not let IBM build a plant in Ft. Smith, which would have given the region MUCH NEEDED high-tech jobs, because of their sexual orientation non-discrimnation policy. Hooters was protested when they tried to come into town. We have 6 Wal-Mart Supercenters yet citizens complain and file lawsuit when Target wants to come into town and give them some competition. We have an extremely high sales tax, at 9.25%. I could go on and on.
Let me say I am not a liberal. I am very much an economic conservative and a social moderate, and I think the best communities are ones that have a progressive voice. Too much conservatism is not a good thing. Compare Fayetteville, AR with Ft. Smith and you see what I am talking about.

Is this really true? DC is a liberal, gun control bastion and has a sky-high murder rate. CA has to be up there, same with NJ and NY.

Is this because people stay together or because they shack up without getting married??
I doubt that "liberal" states tend to follow the ten commandments more than "conservative" ones. The farther left one goes, the less religious one is likely to be, at least with the educated left. That is why atheism is a central tenet of Marxism. I suppose there are a lot of liberal voters in big cities that are poor and religious. They vote for liberals because of their support for social programs.

No need for a generalization like that. It's not all bad down here. Besides, I used to think that any place up north was automatically progressive--I was delusional. I think there are backwards areas all over the U.S.
