The rich have gotten away with too much for too long. Their tax level is laughable (especially when you figure in their loopholes). Tax them at 40%. Minimum. If they don't like it, they can go cry on their yacht.
What do you consider rich? Earning how much per year?

Why should those who have more than you pay higher taxes? Is it because you are jealous they have more than you? That's what it sounds like.
I would tax everyone the same -
Say, for example ONLY, a flat tax rate of 17% is set -with the first 25K tax free.
All other income over 25K is taxed at 17%. Everyone taxed the same.

The way it should be.
Mathematically you are correct. Income tax is also not the only way. It can be substituted with other tax forms such as a tax per capita, or federal sales tax.
The problem is when people want to use taxes outside their original context (provide the state with enough funds to function) into an element of justice, morality and/or education.
That said, in the current situation, I am in favor of raising taxes temporarily on those with high income, simply because they can afford it. Once the economy recovers, we should get back to low taxation.
Neither was there any among them that lacked: for as many as were possessors of lands or houses sold them, and brought the prices of the things that were sold, and laid them down at the apostles' feet: and distribution was made unto every man according as he had need.
-- Acts 4:34-35
Do you expect the gov to work as the church did? Render unto Caesar (the gov) that which is Caesar's. The rest is God's to be voluntarily distributed. Notice I said "voluntarily". Taking it by force was Marx's idea. And so it is also Obama's. Doesn't have any connection to the verse you quote from the Good Book.
You might reword it to say, "Render unto Obama that which is Obama's and unto God that which is God's." After Obama gets done with taxing us, there won't be much left for God or for us to share with our neighbor.
We need to put the tax rates BACK where they were when Bush the idiot took office. The pols won't do it, so we're doomed.
Regarding comments about "everyone should pay something, even if it's only a tiny bit," maybe a decent idea, so everyone has a sense of having bought into the system and having a dog in the fight. But I'm sure it costs the IRS about a hundred dollars to process a return, so if the amount the working poor pay is very small, we end up spending more to collect it then we get.

How about taking a crack at defining what "rich" is?
And, what other services would / should the "rich" get that others don't?
I was kidding.
