House Ways and Means Chairman Charles B. Rangel , already beset by a series of ethics investigations, has disclosed more than $500,000 in previously unreported assets.
According to the original report, Rangel’s net worth was between $516,015 and $1,316,000, while the amended report showed his net worth, as of Dec. 31, 2007, roughly double that amount — at least $1,028,024 and as much as $2,495,000.
That's a big jump. How does it happen on his salary?
Why is this corrupt tax cheat allowed to retain his chairmanship and seat? If a republican had these scandals, he'd be out.
He has a very safe seat, as far as his constituents are concerned he's "just getting his". He's done favors for all the right people, including Hillary Clinton, and despite the bombastic, somewhat buffoonish behavior, he's very smart. And he knows how to play the race card in one of the biggest cities in the United States.

I totally agree. I actually find Rangel quite fascinating. I have seen him on CSPAN over the years when he was explaining legislation or his stance on an issue - and he is not only a very smooth politician, he can be quite engaging. There is nothing stupid about him. And he came up the hard way, is a military veteran, and his constituents adore him.

When you don't pay taxes at all it is easier to build wealth and Charlie doesn't pay property or income taxes unless someone calls him on it. Nobody wants to get too tough with him because he will play the race card on them and that is tough to get out from under these days.
Rangel’s latest campaign finance disclosures show that his campaign and his leadership PAC have now paid more than $1 million to lawyers defending against a wide-ranging investigation of his personal finances.
I doubt they don't care, if they paid attention, there are probably just to many uninformed people voting.
For some that's the case, but Rangel knows how to spread the good times, to take care of his constituents, and many of them love the guy.
On the other hand, his district is becoming increasingly Hispanic, a politically sensitive crowd, much by necessity if nothing else. I don't know how the Democrats have courted the Hispanic vote so sucessfully, when many of them are Catholic and practical with a conservative bent. But that's another thread and another rant.
