But I am shocked beyond measure by reports that earlier this week, nearly a dozen persons, including one with an assault rifle strapped about his shoulders and others with pistols in their hands or holsters, were openly congregating outside a hall at which President Obama was speaking to the Veterans of Foreign Wars.
For myself, without yet suggesting that others follow me in an open boycott, I will not personally travel in a state where civilians carry loaded weapons onto the sidewalks and as a means of political protest. I not only believe such practices are a threat to the future of our democracy, but I am firmly convinced that they would also endanger my own personal safety there.

The Time blog quotes the Phoenix mayor's director of communications as saying, "This was the police department protecting the safety of the community, which was never at risk."
That seems to me as obviously going beyond the facts of that moment. There was obviously a risk to the public that any of the gun carriers could decide to start shooting into the crowd. And Frommer's point was that the Phoenix police did nothing to diminish that risk at that time.
Good for him. He's exercising his rights to boycott something that is a basic human right under the Constitution. Just like card carrying members of the communist party in America, they have the right to be stupid.
However, if his company ever asks for a bailout, he should be forced to rescind his comments to prevent a conflict of interest from arising.

Good for him. I'm glad that he stated the obvious.
Is this the original Frommer or some heir that inherited the business? Because, I thought the original Frommer's first affordable trip was on Noah's Ark. If this is the original, he's got to be like 100 because he's been around forever. The original Frommer got in a snit once because he didn't like who (Bob Grant but you whippersnappers probably don't know Grant) was on the radio station that employed him. He walked off and no one noticed so after about 10 years he came back. I'm not sure if anyone has noticed until now. Apparently, it's okay for him to exercise his first amendment rights but not people with differing opinions...if this is the original Frommer.
Good Grief. The guy was carrying in accordance with the law or he would have been arrested.
You know, I have traveled places that Frommer has promoted, where there were armed guards standing around retail shops, banks and restaurants! And I have gone on tours with guides who had armed guards traveling with us (won't be doing that again!!! I learned to ask some questions). I have seen this in Belize, Honduras and Jamaica . . . and frankly, the fact that the businesses felt they had to have armed guards all over the place was more worrisome to me than a protestor showing up at a meeting. Yet, I don't believe I have seen a warning in Frommer's lit stating that if one wants to tour some areas in Jamaica or Honduras, make sure you round up several gunman to go with you.
Pretty hypocritical, if you ask me.
