Lovely people.

Their manners and behaviour is impeccable.
I've travelled to countries where decorum/politeness is essential (eg Germany) but Thailand is a step higher.

They can't cope with people raising their voice and shouting.
So when that clown started to shout, I could see the effect it was having on the people and I just decided the grab the cnut by the neck and drag the ****er outside.

What i found very disconcerting was the level of what I would consider to be servility.
By servility I mean for example, when a meal is being served, the person serving the food is practically bowing to you, as they serve the food.
No one should be expected to bow to anyone, in my view.
And at times, I felt like saying to the person that "there is no need to bow" but I bit my tongue because I didn't not want to offend their way of doing things.

What is also very very disconcerting is the amount of sex-tourism there.
This is very hard for me to comprehend - seeing westerners walking along the street with young Thai girls.
Very very annoying - and very exploitative in my opinion.

But you will have a great time in Thailand - they're lovely people in a really lovely country.
One other thing to remember is that the Thai Royal family have 100% support of the entire population.
The King is venerated over there.............a great man by all accounts according to my Thai friends!

Enjoy the trip!

I would say that the friendliest countries in europe are Denmark, Holland, Scotland, and Ireland. Great places to see, but the people in those countries really make the trips great.

When we visited the Po river valley in Northern Italy 30 years ago I though I had died and woke up in heaven. What a lovely place.

I should add that I found America to be a pretty friendly place to visit.

NYC, Boston were especially nice and friendly.
I had heard that new yorkers were abrupt........but I didn't find that.
Sure when people are rushing to and from work, they're going to be stressed but that is the case everywhere!

Florida was ok - although I found that many of the people I met there were not very aware about the wider world.

California was very friendly too.
We did a lot of driving through Ca and the scenery and people were great.
Very very nice part of the world - although the San Andreas fault might dissuade me from staying there for longer than necessary!

It was my first visit to that country and, as always, I did my research about the customs of the people of that nation.
(I do this for all countries that I have to visit, because I want to behave in a way which conforms to their customs/practices).
A very important issue is not to raise your voice with the people, with whom you are speaking, in Thailand.

Sure enough, when I checked in to my hotel - there was a loud mouth American literally screaming at a hotel employee.
The guests and hotel employees were appalled.

Naturally, I told the yank to shut the **** up screaming.
When he heard me telling him what to do, he quietened down somewhat.
I carried on with my business but as I was leaving the lobby, I could hear the decibels rising form our overweight American friend.

I asked the lobby attendant to take my bags up to my room and walked back over to this scumbag.
Grabbing him by the shoulder, I escorted our friend outside.
He nearly **** himself.
I explained to this cretin, that screaming at people, anywhere, was not the way to get things done.
I further explained to him that if I heard him screaming at anyone, anywhere, again, that I would kick several colours of **** out of him.
As I said this to him, I made sure to apply the pressure to the scruff of his neck to re-enforce the point.
I then dragged him back in to the hotel and explained to the hotel employee that this man had something to say to him.

Our corpulent American friend humbly apologised for raining his voice, to the employee.

Pity it had to come to a physical force issue - but there you go.

Entering the elevator, a German couple turned to me and said "well done - someone needed to do something about that clown".
It's pretty pathetic that some people have to make up stories to get a point across. Of course I am not surprised, it happens a lot on anonymous boards.

Nothing made up about it.
It happened.
What was done, was done.
Don't condone having to use physical force but sometimes there is no other way.

Nice try.

High taxes, and some evil socialism does not seem to be all that bad after all.

The palaces where they worship unelected officials ...

Denmark, Norway, Finland and Canada have much higher rates of suicide than here in the US. Socialized medicine and assisted suicide aren't just innocent bystanders in that. Combined with a low birth rate these places will soon be gone (as we know them).
This is one road that I hope the US never travels.

It was a great story. It had everything a trashy, American bashing Euro could dream up for a story line:
Character 1. Stan Smith is a Loud, abusive, uncouth, obese American who when confronted will wither like a flower in winter. (i.e., typical.)

Character 2. Myra Smith is the overweight gumsnapping loudly dressed, ignorant wife shouting English orders to the local, Thai speaking hotel help.

Character 3. Anan Erawan is a Meek, slightly built, inoffensive Thai toiling at a hotel which caters to foreigners. He offends no one and accepts abuse stoically.

Character 4. Indurain is a tall, powerfully built European of indeterminate origin who smokes Gauloises. He is purposeful, handsome, intellectual, moral, sharply dressed, and will stand up to American insolence wherever he is needed.

Now to the story...(see above).

In that specific incident, a loud mouth American was the culprit.

If the loudmouth was of any other nationality, I would have reacted the exact same way.
