Critics Decry Obama's 'Indoctrination' Plan for Students
Critics Decry Obama's 'Indoctrination' Plan for Students
A suggested lesson plan that calls on students to write letters to themselves about what they can do to help President Obama following his address to students nationwide is troubling and establishes the president as a "superintendent in chief," education experts told FOXNews.com.

The Department of Education has a "Dear Principal" letter it has sent to schools across the country. It starts like this:
Dear Principal:
In a recent interview with student reporter, Damon Weaver, President Obama announced that on September 8 — the first day of school for many children across America — he will deliver a national address directly to students on the importance of education. The President will challenge students to work hard, set educational goals, and take responsibility for their learning. He will also call for a shared responsibility and commitment on the part of students, parents and educators to ensure that every child in every school receives the best education possible so they can compete in the global economy for good jobs and live rewarding and productive lives as American citizens.
Since taking office, the President has repeatedly focused on education, even as the country faces two wars, the worst economic crisis since the Great Depression and major challenges on issues like energy and health care. The President believes that education is a critical part of building a new foundation for the American economy. Educated people are more active civically and better informed on issues affecting their lives, their families and their futures.
Do people really see the text above as socialist? Reminds me of a few get-togethers with my Mom and Sister Mary Frances about my less-than-stellar achievements in 4th grade ... and there was absolutely nothing "socialist" about either of those two individuals!
Or, maybe it's that last line, and the concept behind it, that's frightening people?
"Educated people are more active civically and better informed on issues affecting their lives, their families and their futures."
Educated people? Better informed on issues? OMG!!!!!
Ummm....You seem to be referring to a different text than everyone else is here. Let me help.
This is where the socialist aspect comes into play. And that dear "principal" letter was sent out to let these people know about a government action which was to be carried out by each state's school system. This was not an idea that came from our educators. This is special delivery straight from Washington. As for your "personal" comparison, the two have absolutely nothing in common. Obama isn't getting together with parents to discuss proactive ways to help their kids educations. He is addressing the nation's children, there is no other word to describe such an address than this word. Indoctrination.
And as for the last line in your post, I fully agree with the "school system's statement" about education. But this is not a letter from the White House. This is the sugar coated please comply letter sent out to principals by the Dept. of Education. The school system isn't going to be addressing my children on Tuesday. President Obama is. Therefore, this letter has absolutely no bearing on the subject being discussed. If you wish to discuss the actual subject, just click on the link and see the program guidelines that will also be distributed to teachers. Our teachers are not the ones we are worried about right now. It's the lesson our leader wishes to pass on to our children only, without informing parents with letters or inviting them to come and sit in as well. That is why the message is suspect.
You realize how silly and paranoid you all look to rational and intelligent people......right?
Unfortunately for them (and, incidentally, their children), it's pretty clear that they do not realize such.
I truly think that some of the posters on here are serious when they say they plan to remove their children from school that day, because they're afraid that their children will be "indoctrinated." What nonsense. "Silly and paranoid" is the understatement of the century.
Honestly, I feel sorry for their children, that they'll be growing up in households headed by such irrational, ridiculous "adults."
I'm so glad I'm not an idiot. I'm equally glad that my children will grow up to be intelligent, thoughtful individuals with well-rounded educations, who were encouraged to form their own beliefs and opinions through exposure to more than one idea/theory/belief, and not sheltered, narrow-minded sheeple who were taught that that "Everything Mommy and Daddy agrees with is correct...any other idea/theory/belief is wrong, and not worth learning about."
My children's elementary/middle school principal said they have no plans to watch it. He said if they decide to watch it, all children will be given the option to do something else.
That's usually how things were done at my kids' schools.

nationwide absent rate 50 to 60 percent? haha. 90 percent of the country doesnt even know about it or care about it in IMO. i dont even think most conservatives care, except the lunatic fringe. man thatd be embarrassing having a parent pull me out of class in front of everyone.
politico, i think these white conservatives just dont want a non white talking to there kids. these school addresses are nothing new, its just nobody cared about them until obama came along and just assume its something new.
Right. The link to the same text can be found on the Department of Education homepage I linked to many posts ago. The specific page linked to above (for pre-K to 6) can be found here:
The U.S. Department of Education encourages students of all ages, teachers, and administrators to participate in this historic moment by watching the president deliver the address, which will be broadcast live on the White House Web site (Streaming Video) and on C-SPAN at 12:00 p.m., ET. We also encourage educators to use this moment to help students get focused and inspired to begin the new academic year. The Department of Education offers educators a menu of classroom activities—created by its teachers-in-residence, the Teaching Ambassador Fellows—to help engage students in the address and stimulate classroom discussions about the importance of education.

Interestingly, none of the prepared text on the Department of Education homepage are Obama's words. Guess that ol' socialism is spreading, eh?

Oh, I think there's another word to use ... paranoia.

It's up to the school systems, the schools, the teachers, and yes, the parents.
1. The two sets of program guidelines each have the following attribution clearly stated on them: Produced by Teaching Ambassador Fellows, U.S. Department of Education.
2. Anyone can watch the same 15-20 minute presentation that Obama will be giving to those participating in schools - on the White House homepage, C-SPAN (TV and radio), and probably other cable TV networks.
3. If, as you say, "the message is suspect" when no one has yet to hear the message, that's just a little too paranoid for me.
oh Lord Obama is going to address children! Who is more paranoid? the kids or their overly racist parents?
He is going to "indoctrunate" them!
Somehow I'm hearing Barack telling our kids to stay in school, study hard & graduate.
However the right wing thinks he is going to turn them all into zombies!
