what exactly is the big deal?
Actually, I don't have a problem with the way any of it is currently written but I think I can see how some people may have a problem with any sort of lesson plan coming from someone in the White House instead of by someone in the Department of Education.

i didn't buy into all that cosby = racist hoopla, but there's a huge difference between addressing a statement like that to a minority alone and addressing it to all people. these problems are certainly not exclusive to the african-american community.

comparing the two situations is a real stretch.

The Republicans can DENY their racism all they want but we here in the south know better. This stuff started long before the "school speech" thing. Down here, schools that used to display photos of all the Presidents of the United States have removed his from walls. Even military installations have taken it down and put President Bush's up in its place- often at the request of the local Ku Klux Klan and Republican organizations. Here is one that happened last winter that was on the news here:

Obama's Picture Removed From Sign

Presidents' pictures are proudly displayed in civic pride, especially at military installations. However, Peterson Air Force Base took President Obama's picture down this week.

According to the article below, "one customer, a military retiree, objected this year because of Obama's race, the cashier said. 'He said they're not going to have no black man on the window where he shops.'"

I'd have to refer back to the speech for the exact wording, but to me it seems like even though he says it's for ALL kids a lot of the things he mentions are big problems in some black communities...ie, one parent households, gangs, no parental presence..what have you. So, anyway, Obama says these things (albeit in a more PC way) telling kids to be accountable and not make excuses. Another black man, Cosby, says pretty much the same thing in a not PC manner and mainly to the adults and he's a traitor.
Sorry, wrong again!!

While certainly a problem in SOME black communities, these exact same problems you mention are alive and thriving in poor white communities in the north and south!

Please stop trying to spin the issue!

Out of all the people that saw obamas ugly mug only ONE said anything.
Spin cycle in full swing.

People ditch common sense and decency just to tow a right wing political agenda.
Do you seriously think this is not an attempt to use our youth to resuscitate his failing presidency? Get real. He is using our kids. It's that simple.

That is just the one who complained to the cashier. Most of this is led by the Republican organizations churches. A military base or a public school is NOT going to remove the picture of a US President because only one person complained.

obviously there was enough of an outcry for the president to take notice and change the discussion questions. footage has been posted of a woman actually CRYING because her kids are going to have to watch a speech by obama.

i haven't seen any evidence that anyone complained about the bush & reagan speeches, except for dick gephardt complaining about bush spending money on his. i was school age during both speeches, i remember bush's, and my parents did not keep me home from school despite being very left wing.
Post # 23 , you alluded to a 'massive public outcry' . I put no words in your mouth . I'm not keeping my kid home. I WANT him to see this. IF there is a reason to be upset about it, can't very well dissent the point if we don't see the subject matter. I teach my son to pay attention, even if he heartily disagrees with what is being said. I await, with interest, the outcome of this address.
