It's clear which way Americans are heading. Mark my words, this bill will never be passed. It's not really worth arguing about it however—just sit back an observe how things unfold.
I think that the very last part of the speech had to have made any Republican with even a tiny bit of conscience feel very small.
In 1965, when some argued that Medicare represented a government takeover of health care, members of Congress, Democrats and Republicans, did not back down. They joined together so that all of us could enter our golden years with some basic peace of mind. You see, our predecessors understood that government could not, and should not, solve every problem. They understood that there are instances when the gains in security from government action are not worth the added constraints on our freedom. But they also understood that the danger of too much government is matched by the perils of too little; that without the leavening hand of wise policy, markets can crash, monopolies can stifle competition, the vulnerable can be exploited. And they knew that when any government measure, no matter how carefully crafted or beneficial, is subject to scorn; when any efforts to help people in need are attacked as un-American; when facts and reason are thrown overboard and only timidity passes for wisdom, and we can no longer even engage in a civil conversation with each other over the things that truly matter -- that at that point we don't merely lose our capacity to solve big challenges. We lose something essential about ourselves. That was true then. It remains true today.
At what price has this "basic peace of mind" been purchased? The government will be sending the bill for the treatment of today's seniors to our kids and grand kids. It's all a giant shell game and future generations are paying for it--just like they'll be paying for ObamaCare.
lol, no wonder the gop constituents believe in death panels cause you are dealing with low information types, ya know? not too many repugs tuning in? Code word for dumbing down...
If Republicans had any confidence that they would have heard anything new, they would have tuned in. The fact is that Obama has been giving the same speech for months. We're just tired of having Obama in our face day after day after day...
He wont mention how he is going to pay for it because he has no clue how to himself.
Nothing new, just some ramped up new words, same bill, same crap same HELL NO.
Actually he did tell us how he planned on paying for it months ago. He wants to tax the "wealthy" and cut over half a trillion dollars from Medicare and Medicaid spending. The Medicare cuts are why seniors have turned against his plan big time.
no but it makes your party look that stupid... i thought that Obama did a great job on calling
out the Repugs on national television their lies especially about the stupid Palin Death Panel accusations.
It also overshadowed a speech that included some of Obama's harshest attacks on his GOP critics to
date, including a denunciation of "death panel" alarmists as liars — a veiled swipe at Sarah Palin —
and a warning to Republicans who want to "kill" reform.
So it was OK for Obama to call others liars but when Joe Wilson called him a liar it was a breach of decorum? Typical liberal double standard.
