Well political parties tend to represent differing views and approach to political policies and problems. People have different philosophies on how any given task of governing should be accomplished and a political party is just a means for like minded philosophies to gather and express their views.
While I think it is rather silly that we only have two viable political parties, or at least that is what the press and establishment wish to perpetuate. After all, we have 300+ million people in this country with views from one end of the spectrum to the other. To think they can all be covered by either one of two views, Republican or Democrat seems ludicrous.
In any event, there is a trend for many states to drop declarations of party affiliation. With open primaries, you can vote for whomever you think is the most qualified, regardless of party. If your choice doesn't make it through the primary, you can vote for whomever in the general elections. This gives rise, or at least ease for independents to adjoin in the political process. In fact, I'm hoping that with public sentiment towards both establishment parties being at such consistently low numbers that more people will look for alternatives. The only hurdle being the contemporary media which believes it has a lock on determining who is viable and who isn't.
If people really wanted to "take back their country", they might try going to the polling booth next time and voting for something other than the spoon fed pinheads that are shoved down their throats.

Well I don't think the damage is from just having political parties, it is more due to not having enough of them in mainstream politics.
People are social animals, they will naturally collect and gather with other like minded individuals, be it in a neighborhood, in the work place, at social functions and especially in politics.
If you want to improve politics, the first thing might be to educate children (tomorrows voters) by teaching them HOW to think instead of WHAT to think. Equip them with the necessary tools to make well informed decisions and to seek their own conclusions.

There has been no party declaration in Texas during my voting lifetime (Nixon). One can vote in the primary of either party, however, the registration card is stamped with that party and should there be a run off you can vote only in that party's runoff. Libertarians don't have a primary in Texas but if one has voted in a major party primary, with the stamp, cannot get into the Libertarian convention.
I vote against the spoon fed pinheads regularly, and never vote for an incumbent in a federal election.
