I am tired of the USPS being used as an example of a poorly run government service! (lawyer, healthcare)

Has anyone pointed out that the USPS is no longer a government run service? They privatized it several years ago, but kept the federal oversight in place..

What other "privatized" business doesn't have to pay taxes, get's a government upheld monopoly on letter delivery, and must be paid by their competitors if they provide competing service to customers? I sure would love to have that kind of "oversight" for my business, I'd be rich! Yet somehow the USPS just sucks so bad and wastes so much money that they are still in the red.
The Postal Service is on track to close fiscal 2009 in a few weeks with a staggering loss of $7 BILLION OR MORE. It is expected to run out of cash by the end of next month. (that would be september since the figures are dated august 23, spokesman.com). it is rated "at risk" by the GAO.

- allow UPS/Fedex to bid, takeover, and run the PO as a private for-profit monopoly?
- allow first class mail competition? -competitors can access mailboxes - any requirements that they serve all Americans or can they cherry pick their markets?

Actually they are not in the red and havent been for some time. The only reason why the postage rates have recently gone up and they appear in the "red" is because of a Congressional mandate that the post office employees pre-fund retiree healthcare benefits (Postal Accountability and Enhancement Act). They also have not received any money from Congress since 1982.

Umm if Fedex and UPS took over that would be competition. They are 2 seperate companies. I am sure a someone would start a rival in inder served communities.
