He's actually not a nut job, or crazy, or stupid. Sure he's crass and harsh at times, but he is very well informed on the issues and what he does say when talking on political issues is based on facts. Say what you want about his style, but he can't really be "shot down" for making stupid political comments like Beck or Limbaugh are.
he is the bill o'reilly of liberals, only, o'reilly is able to drown his "guest" out all on his own.
typically what maher does is bring in 2 relatively smart liberals, 1 relatively inexperienced conservative -- then they find an issue where conservatives are especially weak, and you have a 3-on-1 liberal gang rape.
Ya, Maher is a total loser. Works a few month of the year(and by work I mean talk to celebs about politics for an hour), has millions of dollars, wakes up at noon and smokes weed on the beach while banging the hottest girls Hollywood has to offer.
When PI first came out in the 90's he was more libertarian. Then he made his pile of cash & somewhere during the Clinton impeachment saga decided conservatives would keep him from sleeping with every hot goupie he could get into bed so he turned sharply to the left.
Bill also talks with authors and politicians. Discussion on these matters is interesting.

People with a whole brain understand where Bill is coming from.
A lot of people that only use half of their brain don't get Bill's sophisticated banter. If you've ever seen religulous by Bill Maher you'd realize there are a lot of fools out there.
