Bill Maher--despite some unfortunate errors like his pro-Israel slant and his undue respect for the conniving Clintons--is the closest thing we've had to a really competent, honest social critic since H.L. Mencken wrote for the Baltimore Sun. It's considered heresy in this country to question the great wisdom of the common rabble: the rednecks, the pinheads, the xenophobes, the warmongers, the creationists. That's what Mencken was loved for doing when nobody else would, and that's what Maher is loved for.
He's actually not a nut job, or crazy, or stupid. Sure he's crass and harsh at times, but he is very well informed on the issues and what he does say when talking on political issues is based on facts. Say what you want about his style, but he can't really be "shot down" for making stupid political comments like Beck or Limbaugh are.
Sure he can, as he does it all the time.
