In Kentucky, especially eastern Kentucky, marijuana is grown widely, and right now is harvest season, making growers even more paranoid

Not at all sure what's happened to the title here - if a moderator should happen along, could you remove the first five words or so of the title?

What is so suprising about that? Hikers and government snoops have disappeared from the Appalachian Trail for years. They are generally killed by moonshiners and marijuana growers who are protecting thier buisness.

do they turn up hanged with the word "fed" written on their chests?

obviously whoever killed him was trying to send a message, not just kill him to shut him up.

All the more reason to ensure that those responsible are executed. A message for a message

If I'm not mistaken, that area is also a haven for drug and Meth "labs".

Weaver said he couldn't tell if the tag was a Census Bureau I.D. He said he didn't get close enough to read it.

No matter. A speculative rumor spread by the Associated Press that Sparkman may have been targeted because of his Census job — coupled with an unsubstantiated claim that “fed” was “scrawled” on his chest — was enough “evidence” for the nutroots to convict every outspoken conservative activist and advocate for limited government of a murder that has yet to be determined a murder.
Ain't that the truth. Maybe some nutty leftist did the deed and tried to blame it on those evil RW teabaggers and obamacare protesters. That's just as likely as the leftist scenario.

If the information in the first article you linked to is correct and the body was found bound and gagged, then Michelle Malkin's article is already out of date--since she claims its unknown whether the death was a murder, suicide, or accident. Pretty hard to bound and gag yourself and then manage to hang yourself.. If he did have the word "Fed' scrawled on his chest and he was murdered I think its a fair assement that anti-governement sentiment could've played a role in his demise.. Whether it was angry right wingers, pot growers, or methheads (or a combination of all three-which isn't a far off possiblity considering the area of Kentucky he was found)---who knows?

I don't think that claim has been substantiated yet.

Apparently you didn't read the link:

Weaver says the man also was gagged and had duct tape over his eyes and neck. He says something that looked like an identification tag was taped to the side of his neck.

AP's earlier story is below.

BIG CREEK, Ky. (AP) — Authorities said a U.S. Census worker died by asphyxiation but were releasing few other details about the mysterious case nearly two weeks after Bill Sparkman's body — with the word "fed" scrawled on the chest — was found hanging from a tree near a family cemetery secluded by Appalachian forest.
