Israel is a big brat. Remember how Saddam was villified for not allowing the weapons inspectors in ? (Not defending Saddam as a person) The Bush got all hissy, and temper prone. There were no WMD"S just as Saddam stated. Israel thumbs it's big old honker at the world, and says F you to any kinds of inspections, and they are the US 5th nipple on the Uncle Sam cash cow, along with shrunken nipple # 4, by the way.
Its naive to think Iran wants a bomb because of Israel only. What the hell does Iran have with Israel? There is no common border and no territorial dispute, only Ayatollah's ideology.
Iran wants nuclear weapons for...Iran. They are a terrible threat for everyone in the region and not only there. Just ask Egypt and Saudia what they think about a possible nuclear Iran.
But the worst part is that their bombs may find a way into Islamic martyrs hands...

"So then we have to ask, if Israel having nuclear weapons is not really a deterrent and we assume Iran will use them, then we can only conclude that nuclear weapons are not actually a deterrent in the first place.
If this is the case then the tax payers of the United States have been bilked out of over 5 trillion dollars through the development, creation, and maintenance of our own nuclear arsenal. The whole purpose of which is to serve as a deterrent.
So which is it?"

I read a book by J. Flethcher Prouty, a former AF officer and pilot, who explained it this way (and I'm
paraphrasing): The world understands that any country foolish enough to use a nuclear weapon would not only be destroyed itself, but would ignite a nuclear firestorm that would annihilate the planet. Therefore, those who profit from war have seen to it that there are always small wars to be created. The Falkland Islands is a perfect example; we went to war with England over a few small islands off the coast of Argentina populated mainly by sheep. Sometimes it's to protect their own
investments, as in Central America: United Fruit has many operations there. Hordes of socialists were to storm our border with Mexico with the Sandanistas. All these years later, Daniel Ortega has been
democratically elected, but any talk of a socialist insurgence from Nicaragua is long past.
I agree with the OP: The duplicity of some parts of the American foreign policies have compromised our "good faith" with many countries. Your series of posts in this thread are excellent.
Chomping at the bit. Won't Boomer and Billy Rob have a squirtfest if this takes place ? Rush Limbaugh will explode in ecstacy ! Splat. He might even swallow his stogie, and burn off his adams apple. Ah ! The stench of Zionist paranoia.

True, but that's exactly the point, even Egypt and the Saudis deep inside don't think Israel would ever "first strike", but they sure as heck fear Iran would, and as you point out, perhaps even at them. If Saddam can invade his neighbor, why can't Mahmoud A. nuke one, true?
As for the post about why Iran would nuke Israel if it were assured it's own destruction in return and what do they have with Israel? Well, all the countries in that region see Israel as the "enemy", so how about Mahmoud A. thinking something on the lines of it being "extreme suicide bombing" to "wipe them off them map" and seeing the end of his own country in return as "neeed sacrifice" (I'm sure he'd be hiding somewhere safe.......). Or some terrorist faction within the country being given a hold of a bomb or two to do the same so it doesn't look like Iran "officially" did it. That crackpot is one of the few people I really think may at the very least be tempted to consider nuclear suicide.
But that said, I do agree that it is mostly "Ayatollah ideology" driving it and I think deep inside (at least among the younger generation) Iran could minus their current despot be somewhat of a "live and let live" country, the proof being all the protests over his "election" earlier this year. I mean under the Shah I think Iran and Israel even had diplomatic relations! It may not quite get back to that if Mahmoud A. was ever overthrown, maybe at best they'd have "cool" diplomatic relations a la Egypt and Jordan and be a "mediator" country in the conflict.
Israel has never threatened any nation with it's nuclear weapons.
Then what are these threats of bombing Iran?
Why do you think Egypt is silent, Israeli threat to Nuke Aswan High Dam and flood the country?
So what will happen to those aging nukes in a country the size of Israel?
They will become more of a threat to the owner than the neighbor
